Oral thrush won't go away
« on: January 17, 2011, 06:30:19 am »
Does anyone have any experience with oral thrush treatments?

My Dr prescribed a month course of Diflucan with some temporary results, but my tongue is still white / yellow (the swab showed that is definitely is a strain of candidiasis).

I found this on the net but not sure whether it is legit??

I will print off some stuff from this site and discuss it with my doctor. I am trying Pau D'arco tea (Day 1) and it was not cheap ($38 for tea!!) but then again if it works....

I know I should avoid sweet sugary things and beer.

Hi,

Sometimes thrush can be very difficult to treat, and it may take a while using Diflucan to get rid of it completely.  I would not be spending money on any other remedies.

Here's a lesson from the site.  Read it carefully, and discuss some of the prescription  options within this lesson,  to your doctor : ( 6-Pages of lessons) If your a smoker and drink alcohol you should probably give this up.

What are all your medications that you are currently taking ? What are you current numbers? Are you on any antibiotics?  Making dietary changes may help.

It might depend on your CD number. In my case, I had a very white tongue, and the Dr told me as your numbers get better it will improve.
Anyway , as I was having some fungal problems in my lips (cheilitis )  , he told me to use generic diflucan (fluconazole), for 5 days, as it like magic would get rid of the lip thing.
It sure did disappear.
After that every month for 5 months I would get back the cheilitis.
3 days of use and gone.
The Dr told me no to use to much the fluconazole, as it was toxic to the liver. So I folllowed his advice.

Almost 10 months later, even with my low numbers, my tongue looks normal.
No cheilitis.

I have to tell you that I also went to the dentist , and he told me to use a toothpaste specific for people with braces, and it also comes in mouth wash, but I don't think is available in the USA, but you can look its ingredients: Ortho-kin (with combination of Chlorhexidine degluconate, Sodium Fluoride, Zinc Acetate), both in toothpaste and mothwash.

I think you just need to be patient.

Thanks for your advice everyone.

My CD4 is now above 500, and my dentist said that the yellow coating is now very minimal. I have been taking the pau d'arco tea as well so that might have helped - I think being run down and low CD4 count does make a difference.

I do not take asthma puffers.

I am doing fine (apart from the alcohol intake - I think it is just that time of year!)
