Title: undetected viral x undetected viral no using condoms. what risks ?
Post by: alberto pinto on March 26, 2014, 12:18:46 pm
I'm from Brazil, I'm HIV positive for 25 years, have undetected viral load, kept a relationship with a negative serum for 10 years, always using condoms. Now I'm in love with another guy hiv + both with undetectable viral load and are not using a condom and would like to know what risks we run? Thanks Where can I find news about this topic?

I'm interested to see what some of the more experienced members have to say about this. This is a pretty hot topic of debate and there's many different opinions on it. It seems the risk of contracting another strain of hiv, more commonly known as "super-infection" or "re-infection" has been significantly reduced by successful ART treatment. Actually, transmission at all for that matter. I believe in the 2-year partner study it's been a 0%-4% chance, and thats with only one person being poz, on meds and undetectable.

I'm not saying there still isn't a risk, though, I just don't know what the numbers are.

In the end though, regardless of what facts you have to go off of, it's ultimately your choice. You're doing the right thing by asking questions, though and this forum is a wonderful resource.

Biz, I thought you weren't going to try to pirouette before you could crawl?

Alberto, there is no reason - apart from other STIs - why you and your new partner need to use condoms. You're both on meds and undetectable so it makes it hiv a non-issue between the two of you.

You do NOT need to worry about reinfection. That's only something someone who is very recently infected in the first place, and not yet on meds, needs to worry about. Even then it's exceedingly rare.

Welcome to the forums, Alberto! :)

Guys, thank you very much for the answers. Love all fighting, expose themselves and collaborate so that we can live better. ps I use the google translator so forgive my shortcomings of language. :)

Sorry...*slap on the wrist* can't help it.  (Especially when it's eventually going to pertain to myself and my partner as well).
