Do you guys know about toxoplasmosis?
« on: July 28, 2010, 12:58:51 pm »
That was the kind of brain infection I had when my cd count was below 50.  Is there anyone here who treated such an OI?  The infection is said to be caught from touching infected cat faces, eating uncooked meet and blood transfusion and/or organ transplant.  I never have any of these things in my life so to speak.   But does it mean that this HIV is doing what something is unthinkable.   Are there also similar things that the virus give rise to.  The Hiv is really sh***t.

I'm sorry, but I really can't understand what you're attempting to ask here.

Basically these things happen when one let's their cd4s drop to <100.  You have openly stated that you spent close to a decade an AIDS denialist influence your treatment decisions, or lack thereof, so well you know how that turned out.  HIV does indeed suck, but it sucks a lot more when one does things like that.

Not personally but I am very much aware of it. This is why it is recommend that people with low numbers have someone else clean their cat litter boxes. You can get it from working in your yard or garden where an infected animal has used the facilities. Wash those hands after being outside and use sanitizer.

According to this website's Opportunistic Infections lesson on Toxoplasmosis, approximately 40% of all people living in the United States have been exposed to toxoplasma gondii at some point in their lives. It's only people with severely compromised immune systems that have to worry about it.

Here are a list of the most common oppportunistic infections you can get when your CD4s fall below certain levels. The propensity for the person in question to develop serious OIs varies depending on CD4 level (<100 vs/ <200):

http://www.aidsinfonet.org/categories/view/13

Here is a description of toxoplasmosis:

http://www.aidsinfonet.org/fact_sheets/view/517

Here is some info that responds to your question about contracting toxo:
Quote
Toxoplasmosis (toxo) is an infection caused by the single-celled parasite toxoplasma gondii. A parasite lives inside another living organism (the host) and takes all of its nutrients from the host.
The toxo parasite is very common in cat feces, raw vegetables, and the soil. It is also common in raw meat, especially pork, lamb, or deer meat. It can get into your body when you breathe in dust. Up to 50% of the population is infected with toxo. A healthy immune system will keep toxo from causing any disease. It does not seem to spread from person to person.

If that's the case then I am pretty sure I have the bug.  I had a cat for a few years and just got rid of it when I started leaving home for long periods at a time, I eat raw vegetables a few times a week, and I enjoy my beef medium rare.  Even though you didn't mention beef in the quote above.  50% of the population has it reassures me that I am probably a part of that 50%.  I'm gonna read the symptoms.  So far I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary regarding my health.

I am tempted to open a poll called "How long before Etay will come up with an IO and what will it be?" but I guess I am not that mean (yet), and even that would still not be as half amusing yet difficult to watch as your continuing train-wreck-in-slow-mo of a suicide attempt.

Komnaes: no need.  I ate some bad ass and got Cryptosporidiosis last July.  It is a AIDS defining illness and according to NY department of health people who are HIV- are expected to recover within two weeks.  Those with compromised immune systems "may have severe and long lasting illness".  Mine lasted a week.  Nothing since then. That's why I'm not convinced that my immune system is not working.

How confident you are to tell that you are not convinced that your immune system is not working with only CD count of 52 and that huge load of VL.  I am not letting you drive mad but you should be careful and put yourself on meds AQAP.  Yaa Quickly.  ::)

Crypto can happen to HIV- folks, and you were not the first one with this low of a CD4 to recover from it seemingly with little damages, and you will not be the last.

So maybe I should start that poll afterall... who knows for how long you can least as a poster child for the denialists.

Well Etay, according to your quote a few posts up:
"Komnaes: no need.  I ate some bad ass and got Cryptosporidiosis last July.  It is a AIDS defining illness and according to NY department of health people who are HIV- are expected to recover within two weeks."

You have already had an infection, so wouldn't that mean you should do what you say above - "pay for HAART myself" -- whether the infection was from "bad ass" or whatever, you said right above that it is an AIDS defining illness --- so what gives?

Because it's such a common stomach bug.  One that HIV-'s get.  I recovered from it.  It didn't come back.  It's been a year already! What indicates a damaged immune system?

I really don't get it, Skeebo.  I get a stomach bug that many other people get.  And I recover, just like everyone else.  I don't get it.  I admit that! Why should I be concerned when I recovered without issue? Now let's be realistic.  If the infection was recurrent I would have been on HAART by now.

Hi Etay,

I have never before joined the chorus urging you to reconsider your decisions, partly because there were enough other people already doing that, and partly because you're an adult and I don't like telling other adults what to do.   I also want to say that I hugely admire your spirit, your bravery, and your independence.  However, a recent personal experience moves me to intervene.

Like you, I can be described as "the picture of health" and I almost never get sick--from Dec. 1999 to a couple of months ago, I never missed a day of work for illness.  In the late afternoon of Sunday May 16th I was busy baking a cake to bring to the good-bye party of a friend later that evening.  After the cake went into the oven I made the icing for the cake, called the hostess of the party, and chatted happily for a few moments, no care in the world.  By the time the cake had to come out of the oven an hour later,  I was covered in sweat, my teeth were chattering, my body felt like fire but I was shivering and freezing despite standing in a hot kitchen.  A few minutes later I couldn't even stand any more (needless to say I did not go to the party and that cake went completely to waste.)  What followed was three and half weeks in bed, at the height of which I was sleeping twenty hours a day and at the end of which I had lost fifteen pounds.  It turned out to be cyto-megalovirus.  That is what cyto-megalovirus was able to do to me, someone with 685 t-cells at the last count.  What do you think it might be able to do to someone with 50 t-cells?  How are you not worried about such things?  It's not a rhetorical question; I really want to know.

Well Etay, you do have a point there, but we also have to take into account what's realistic for you is not necessarily what's realistic for me.  I have a friend who let her numbers slip because she is just not going for treatment.  She feels fine, just like you, but they suspect she might have a lesion on her liver which could possibly turn out to be cancer.  They don't know yet though.

The goodness we feel on the outside sometimes hides the truly nasty crap happening on the inside.  That's the sucky part of Dahiv, you really just don't know.

I'm not a poster child. Lindsey Nagel has that spot covered.

But you're a STAR over there in the denialist forum. I am surprised that Carter still has not started selling t-shirts with your name and photo on them with these:

"I wouldn't worry about CD4 count ONE BIT."

"I was excited to finally have an AIDS diagnosis because my tcells dropped below the 200 mark. I am a witness to everyone in my church that an AIDS diagnosis doesn't mean anything."

And not to mention your youtube videos. I am sure Brent Leung has been in touch? No?

Komnaes: I looked up Brent Leung.  If you must know, I don't really care for his documentary.  I like the other producers much better.  You would know that if you followed my Facebook statuses.  I'm sure we are friends on there, you seem to follow me everywhere else.  Anywhoo, if you actually read some of the post on "that other site" you would know that alot of the active members are on HAART.  Some stopped for awhile just to get back on them later.  I'm more comfortable on that site more than this one because they seem to be more open to ideals other than their own.  I can disagree with someone other there and it's ok as long as I have references.  I can't disagree over here without being called names.  One thing that I've learned in my short 29.5 years of life is that sometimes I'm wrong.  Not only am I wrong sometimes, but I need people to help me guide through life's challenges and try to figure out why the hell we are here in the first place.

Etay

The trouble with a really low CD4 count is you don't always feel ill, you get infections but because your immune system don't work proper you feel fine. Then you crash and burn, and get real bad symptoms, brain damage and lots of pain. This is how it goes, nearly all the time. Life is not 2Fast2Furious 3D edition. You wanna be in the exceptions and walk out the car alive, you better see the script writer pronto.

Don't kid yourself.. no one is following you. You MADE yourself so visible here and there and on youtube that it would be hard to miss.

I am open to ideas that are worth opening to, and so far none of yours seem worth the while. And the only reason why I looked up first and then responded to what you've written is to make sure that I did give you the benefit of doubt that you might still be a decent person, maybe just misguided. But what I found is something worst than a denialist.

You want to have it both ways - you come here, take every opportunities you can to butt in conversations with the only intention of telling us how special you are, how you heal quicker and are healthier even than HIV- folks even with double digit CD4, all the while maintaining in here that you don't doubt the science of HAART.

But then, on the other site, you play it up and say things like an AIDS diagnosis "doesn't mean anything". So what are you actually doing here? All those good folks here have been giving you advises with the best of intention. And what you are doing to us? Mocking us, that's what you are doing.

You have had all the guiding you need since you signed up - and you have taken none. We can find out all those things you have written and said elsewhere easily, so stop playing the humble fool that you're definitely not.

Whew...Ann. I thought you came to tell me that I've been banned!

I'm more comfortable on that site more than this one because they seem to be more open to ideals other than their own.  I can disagree with someone other there and it's ok as long as I have references.  I can't disagree over here without being called names.

Etay, if you're being called names here, please use the report button and let us know. I remember shortly after you joined us that I told people to stop calling you a denialist, because I don't really think you are one.

However, that doesn't mean I don't think you're playing a very dangerous game with your life and health. You most certainly are and it's worrying. There have been too many people who felt just fine, but suddenly became deathly ill. And I mean suddenly. You are on very thin ice and it's only a matter of time before you're in over your head.

As for me banning you, I don't want to because you're going to need us someday soon. You won't get banned for your unwise decision to not take meds despite your clear need, but you WILL get banned if I ever catch you using any part of this site to promote or pass on ANY denialist pseudo-science whether it be in the form of a link to a denialist site or a cut and paste of their rantings or anything in-between.

I encourage you to have a thorough and careful read through the articles found on the AIDSTruth.org and AIDS Denial is Pseudoscience websites.

I'm sure you're aware that I'm of the opinion that yes, a person can go years without meds and be healthy - I'm doing it myself. BUT, I also keep a close watch on my labs and the numbers in your signature line are a very good example of why. For those of us who progress slowly, in many cases when the numbers crash, they do so quickly just like yours did. There's no way I'd ever go down into the CD4 counts that you have, regardless of how I feel. If you can't think of yourself, at least think about what you'll put your loved ones through when you're in a hospital bed hooked up to a respirator with more tubes than you thought possible coming and going from your body.

edited to say... After seeing a post of Etay's in another thread, I realised I was thinking of his numbers history in his signature line at a different forum that shall remain nameless. It goes back further and for quite a few years, Etay had fantastic numbers. Not anymore though. :-\

elf,

cats have the potential to be vectors for acquired diseases such as toxoplasmosis and hemobartonellosis...they are not automatically carriers simply based upon their species.
