I did NOT fast for my first hiv labs!
« on: September 11, 2014, 02:00:52 pm »
Is this a bad thing? The person who sent me to get the labs said I didn't have to fast if I didn't want too. However the place I got the labs said i needed too, and I didn't but so I would not have to reschedule I just told them I did fast. Is this going to be a problem?  :-[

I've never fasted and I would bet 99.9% here don't either.  If they were checking your lipids or wanted a fasting glucose, then your results (for lipid and glucose) may be skewed.  I actually forgot to fast for my lipid lab and the results were basically the same as when I fasted, but I digress.

For CD4 and vl, I have never been told to fast and have never read that anywhere-- except someone posted here once that you get better labs for CD4 and vl, when you fast.  Never heard that again.  You didn't screw up your labs for CD4 and vl by not fasting.  There may have been other things they were checking, where you needed to fast.

Yep ... fasting or not will not effect cd4 counts or viral load and if it does I'm in trouble because I never fast for those labs . I also refuse to not drink my normal whole pot of back coffee in the morning before I leave the house and that includes having my labs done . I told my doctor and she said she would take it under consideration when she interpreted my labs .

I would fast for certain labs and test when necessary  . I'm having a colonoscopy next week and I will cut them a break and fast for that, its the polite thing to do .  ;)

I concur with the previous posts. I have to fast because of lipids but not for CD4 or VL. When you talk to your doc, ask him/her if they want you yo fast next time.

Hi,

I never had to fast for HIV labs.  The only time fasting was required is when a lipid panel was done.  Don't worry about it !.  :)

Next time your in the doctors office, ( or when you discuss these labs) ask him when should you have to fast for labs, and mention to him that you did not fast for those labs.
