diabetes
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:03:42 am »
I have had very well controlled diabetes for about 6 or 7 years now .

For the last month my blood sugar has been at its lowest around 250 ish and up to 500 on most days . I saw my doc last week and she told me watch my diet and see if I improve before I come back in .

I take my metformin twice a day as perscribed and know its all my fault because of my diet . I have really been feeling icky all week and know its time to get serious about my diabetes .

I have been doing allot of reading on line trying to find healthy things to eat but its hard to find recipes or information for everyday eating or things that are not based on fancy recipes or ridiculous ingredients .

I would appreciate hearing from other diabetics about how they got a handle on this or some links to reasonable food for diabetics web sites .

Hi jg.

I am not a diabetic, but my mother is, and my father was.

I don't know which part of the world you live in , if you are looking for a food that may help, you could
    try " Bitter melon "
This is a food that is used as a part of normal daily diet, in Asia and reputed to help with diabetes.

I love the taste ( very bitter ) have eaten it as long as i can remember.
Please research and seek advise from others too.

young fruit can be eaten raw, or the fully grown boiled or fried,
my favourite is thinly sliced, fried in olive oil with onions and tomatoes.

Hey J,
Sorry I didn't see this sooner.  About a year and 1/2 ago, I went to see a diabetic dietician, who gave me lots of ideas about how to eat, and not just what to eat.  I know how hard it can be sticking to a diabetic diet.  One of the meds I'm on causes me to crave unhealthy things, especially during the night.  I guess that's because I take the med right before going to bed.  Anyway, the dietician gave me a booklet that breaks down food according to startches, fruits, veggies, meats, etc., and how much a diabetic should be eating.  It's helpful.

You didn't mention taking Insulin, so you're only taking Metformin?  I've been Insulin-dependent ever since being diagnosed with diabetes.  I was wondering, because I was going to tell you something I do with the fast-acting Insulin, when I know I may be eating sweets, or a little too much of something good.  But of course, if you're not on Insulin, it would do you no good.

Good luck seeing the nutritionist.  Please let me know how you're doing.

Thanks Betty . I'm beginning to think I might be better off on insulin because of my eating habits . I'm willing to change the way I eat but diabetes is frustrating because food makes my diabetes worse and you have to eat so it just seems like a never ending circle .

There is something about it I just don't get ... you get diabetic recipes and it seems to be for the most part what I eat anyway . Then when my sugar gets sky high I feel like a kid that did something wrong but just cant seem to grasp what it is . Very strange .

Some diabetics who just take the pills progress to Insulin.  I have a friend who did just that about 7 months ago.  Then there are people like my brother, who control it with Metformin, diet and exercise.  And he exercises every day, which is something I don't do.  Anyway, I'm sure your doctor is on top of it, and will get you on Insulin, should you need it.

jg,

Did you ever try chromium to help control your diabetes? Remember to check with your ID if you decide to give it a try:

Thanks for the link . It sounds encouraging . I printed out the info and will see my endo doc next month and discuss it with her . She is big on supplements and vitamins so I'm betting she will have an open mind .
