Title: Bodybuilding competition
Post by: GSOgymrat on June 06, 2007, 09:58:42 pm
Back in January I committed to entering my first bodybuilding competition and the date is almost here, June 16. I've been working out faithfully, dieting, learning to pose, learning about how competitions work, tanning, shaving my body hair... it's quite the study in vanity and body dismorphia. I'll be competing in a natural competition, which means unlike regular competitions people are not suppose to use hormones and steroids. There is a prejudging at 11:00 AM where you line up and do mandatory poses and a panel of judges decides who wins for each category. Then at 6:00 PM there is a show where you have to do a 90 second posing routine set to music and they annouce who wins.

I'm not that stressed about the prejudging because I'm not that invested in winning. I'm WAY stressed about the evening show. I have a phobia about being on a stage in front of an audience and being there with almost no clothes on doesn't make it easier. Added to the drama is I have at least a dozen friends, many of them coworkers, coming to see me. So if I blow it I will never live it down.

I've posted progress pictures on bodybuilding.com... kind of like myspace for muscleheads. Here you can see me bald! Hairless! In a banana hammock! In full motion video! If Jeromy has the balls to show us his... um... balls then I can show you humiliating Polaroids of my fat days and me in my "posing suit".

I seriously want to thank the people on this forum who have given me encouragement, especially with the lipoatrophy issues. As anyone with lipo knows it really messes with your confidence and self-esteem. This is an opportunity for me to say "screw you" to my lipo issues and put it to rest. It's ironic that after spending so much time worrying that I didn't have enough bodyfat now my trainer is worried I have too much. Let me tell you bodybuilders go to drastic measures to get "cut". I just hope I'm not ruining all of Dr. Serra's PMMA by pushing my bodyfat so low. Oh well, another excuse to go to Rio!

So hit the link, have a laugh but wish me luck and pray I don't have a full blown panic attack on stage... 'cause it's a real possibility!

I hadn't heard people with HIV+ shouldn't do bodybuilding. I'm not using any substances other than protein powder. Reducing my bodyfat probably isn't the best thing in case I got sick but my CD4 is well into normal range right now. I'm sure not what the problem would be.

Ford  you look great.. When I first had to do presentations in front of large audiences I was advised to use the old idea of  pretending everyone in the audience was sitting there In their underwear... it works,,sets the whole tone for you....  I know who ever is there is there to support you... the judges love the audience reaction to the competitors..so have your friends hoop and holler as much as they can when you are on stage......Great video ... have your "trainers" seen it... any critique?  I thought you looked super.....before and after...
Is someone going to take a video in the competition?  would love to see who you beat!!

Thanks everyone for the support! To answer some of your questions, I hired a personal trainer back in December for 5 sessions and when he found out I had never used steroids pushed me to try competing. He's been helping me for free since then. I showed him my routine for the first time a few days ago and he was impressed given the fact I've never done it before. He suggested some changes in the way I pose but not the routine itself. Tomorrow I'm going to a posing clinic for novices facilitated by a bodybuilding judge and will be interested in what he has to say. The competition is in High Point, NC which is adjacent to Greensboro.

My trainer wants me to stop drinking water 30 hours before the competition and use a natural diuretic. Being dehydrated makes your muscles look more defined on stage. This is where I'm going to have to draw the line. I'm not willing to induce an electrolyte imbalance and risk my health just to win a trophy. I'll reduce my water intake but I'm not going without.

When you walk out on that stage...just think...damn I look good!

This competition has driven me to drink.

True confessions time. One reason I'm nervous about being on a stage is because all the men in my family have a condition called essential tremor. Basically, I get tremulous, especially when experiencing anxiety, muscle fatigue, low blood sugar or cold temperatures. It's not noticeable normally but sometimes, such as after a hard workout, I can't really sign my name because I shake. As a kid I sucked at the game "Operation" and the anxiety of having to stand in front of a class and give a book report made me look like I was doing a Kathryn Hepburn impersonation. I'm worried this competition is going to be the perfect storm of stressors: performance anxiety, muscle fatigue and dehydration. Certain medications are suppose to help but I have never felt the need to take them before. Another thing that is suppose to help is alcohol.

So I decided to experiment with some alcohol. I went to the ABC store today for the first time in my life. Feeling like a teenager in a porn shop I bought one of those little bottles of vodka; peach flavored sounded nice. I had just had a hard workout and was moderately tremulous, went home and took a swig. GROSS! :P I had not drank alcohol in 20 years and now I remember why, it's vile. My tremors have subsided but I don't know if it was the booze or because I'm resting. I'm not really feeling anything... but maybe that means it's working.
Title: Re: Bodybuilding competition
Post by: Ann on June 12, 2007, 06:14:15 am
LOL... peach flavoured vodka and you wonder why it tasted vile? ;D

If you really think alcohol will help with the tremors, try some regular vodka (not Stoli!) and put a shot-glass full of it into a tall glass of your favourite fruit juice - with plenty of ice. If you use enough juice, you won't be able to taste the vodka (much).

On another subject, I'm thinking that the reason Ivan may have heard that body building isn't good for us is because so many people assume body building goes hand in hand with steroid use. Steroid use is definitely a no-no for people with hiv. I'm glad to see you are a person who is proving you don't have to use steroids to get a body worthy of competing with.

I'm also really glad to see that you've drawn the line with the dehydration thingy. Good for you for sticking up for yourself and your health!

Good luck with the competition - and remember to have fun!

Ann

Nandrolone Decanoate is routinely given to HIV patients for weight gain, certainly in the more severe cases and it's a steroid.  I took it twice weekly for 4 years with no negative effects on my lab numbers.  As long as you're taking the proper dosage and have your liver and kidneys monitored there's no safety issue.  It was also covered by ADAP in most states, though less and less because more use Androgel now even though it's much more expensive.  Unfortunately Watson Pharmaceuticals, under political pressure from the right wing "War on Steroids,"  has halted production and now HIV patients with extreme wasting have fewer alternatives.

http://www.medibolics.com/ADAP.pdf

that web site (if you shorten the URL) is a wealth of information on the subject of HIV and this issue.

also on Watson: http://savehivwastingmeds.blogspot.com/

I think what you might be referring to are the extremely high dosages that bodybuilders take of these substances, that's the abuse, not the drug itself.

I just wanted to add this caveat for the benefit of those on the board who are not that familiar with hormone replacement and HIV.

Yes, you're right, that is more along the lines of what I was thinking. Also, there are many different steriods and the way I worded my post, I was guilty of inadvertantly lumping them all together.

Thanks.

Nandrolone Decanoate is one of the banned substances in natural bodybuilding. I have nothing against prescribed steroids but I'm glad I never had to take them or I wouldn't be allowed to compete.

I spoke to one of the psychiatrists I work with today about the essential tremor and she wrote a prescription for propranolol. It's a blood pressure medication that helps with tremors and anxiety. She referred to it as a "stage fright" drug. I'm going to practice my posing with it tomorrow to make sure I don't have any bad side effects.
Title: Re: Bodybuilding competition
Post by: anniebc on June 12, 2007, 06:23:00 pm
Hi Ford

I'm sure you've already been told about this, but please be aware of the dosage you will be taking, I know Propranolol can have an impact on your reactions and impair your thinking, and normally stopping the meds has to be done under Doctors orders, but I'm assuming this is very short term and may not apply in your case.

Let us know how you go after your practice with them tomorrow.

I'm sure you will be fine..all that hard work is going to pay off...and after this one there will be no stopping you.. trust me and have fun... ;)

Hugs

I survived my first bodybuilding competition and got 2nd place! I think there were 12 men in the novice category. They lined us up and split us into short and tall classes. At 5'9" I was the tallest guy in the short class. It was pretty obvious once we got into our suits that the guys in the short class were in better shape then the guys in the tall class. I felt pretty prepared except I didn't anticipate that I we would be the last group and I didn't bring enough food. My trainer gave me a bag of dry oatmeal which I had to eat without water because I couldn't drink any water 24 hours before the competition. :P I was not as nervous as I expected to be in the prejudging and while my posing wasn't perfect I did an okay job. I got a lot of compliments from the other bodybuilders on how conditioned I was. I was worried about being tremulous but some of these guys had not practiced their posing enough and were REALLY shaking badly. My tremulousness wasn't that noticeable.

After the prejudging came the evening show. This is when there was a big audience, they announced the winners and I had to do my individual routine set to music. I initially was very anxious about the evening show and would wake up in the middle of the night thinking "holy crap, why did I agree to do this". After the prejudging I felt really charged to do it, even though I was getting exhausted from dehydration, anxiety and posing. I went out on stages to big cheers as about a dozen people had come to see me. My routine went very well and I was so thrilled and relieved to have done it without falling out! Being in the top three was not a surprise because after the prejudging as everyone back stage seemed to agree two other guys and myself were the top ones out of both the short and tall groups but no on agreed who was the winner. I was not surprised to get second because the guy who beat me not only had a great body but was much more experienced and his posing made mine look awkward.

Afterwards we went out for pizza and had a great time. My friends gave me a banner that said "Built Ford Tough" with a bunch of well wishes from people from work. Having not considered myself to be bodybuilder material at all when I started this back in January I feel great that I set a goal, worked my ass off and actually placed. I'm even more happy that I faced my lipo insecurities, faced my stage fright, got up on that stage and did well. I could not have done it without so many people wishing me well and I really appreciate all the encouragement from everyone on this forum. It may not seem like much to type "good luck, you can do it" but I read over everyone comments before I left the house to psych myself up.

Here is a picture of the winners of my group. I'm in the green suit (I'm not tall, they are just short) and the guy in the center got best overall novice. Sorry about the quality but I will post a link to better pictures when I get them.

Ford, I can only say I am speechless. Sorry to have missed this thread before the competion but I haven't been logging in too much, lately. You know I have backed you up from the beginning and after going through this thread (before going into the link you posted) I jumped up and yelled "YESSS" when you mentioned you got SECOND PLACE! I knew you where getting in the top three! I am so proud of you that I could jump on you a give you a damn big strong happiness hug! ;D Your body change has been magical. Just awesome! The abs really gave a new look to your whole body. It was perfect for the competition. You said that you are not tall but that "lean look" makes you look taller than before. The form is excellent and the posing in the video reminded me of the Greek statue throwing the disk. Talking about posing, I got emotional when I heard your selection of musical background. It all blended perfectly; your hiv status, overcoming stage fright, the words to that song, your smile, your movements matching the music, and the energy and pride I perceived overall in the video, made me echo those words to the song, "What have you done for me, to make me feel proud?"...in your case, my friend, EVERYTHING you have done has made ME feel proud!  ;)  You ARE an inspiration! Congratulations...

Thanks everyone! I've been so focused on this competition I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. I definitely am not going to do another bodybuilding competition any time soon. My partner, while very proud of me, doesn't find bodybuilders attractive and hopes I never do this again.

It was a real education learning about bodybuilding and I'll share a little behind the scenes story. Part of doing a competition is getting tanned and oiled. You have to get ridiculously tanned because dark skin displays muscle definition better and because when you go on stage the lights wash you out. Even black guys put bottle tan on. To prepare for this I had gone to a tanning bed for a couple of weeks, had a professional spray-on tan and applied two coats of a bottled tan for bodybuilders. My partner was out of town so my 80-year-old mom was painting me with bottle tan like she was refinishing furniture. I was one step away from looking like I was doing black face.

So backstage everyone is in sweats so they don't get fake tan everywhere, cause this stuff rubs off on everything. The manager of the show tells everyone not to put on more bottle tan because it won't have time to dry. Everyone has to be oiled in a special area by the approved "oilers", people who's job is to spray bodybuilders with Pam cooking spray and then rub it everywhere. When it is time to suit up this one guy takes off his sweats and he is white as a glass of milk! Then he goes over to the oil area and has a friend who is trying to rub on bottle tan. Thirty minutes later this guy is lined up on stage with 7 other guys for the prejudging and he starts sweating like a garden sprinkler. The tan didn't have time to dry and mixed with the oil and copious amounts of perspiration just starts running off his body in little brown streams. It looked like someone had taken a bucket of syrup and just thrown it at him. He was is a complete panic and in the middle of the judging starts calling to people back stage for a towel. No one gave him one, not because we are competitive bitches, but because we knew we would get into trouble for getting on stage in the middle of a judging. I was mortified for him. I don't think he showed up for the night show.

I'm keeping the shaved head for the time being. The rest is growing out and is suprisingly not itchy.

I'm at a loss as far as what to do as far as exercise now. I need a new goal.

If you knew my partner you would realize why I burst out laughing when I read your post! The two of us dancing... together... in public! Salsa dancing!

That's hysterical!

I would ask him as a joke but I couldn't keep a straight face. I couldn't drag him to a gay bar... a gay anything... with a bulldozer.

Well, Ford, you win Second place...congratulations! And I have to tell you, that you deserve it...though personally I think that 1st would have been more appropriate...but maybe I am just biased!

Congrats you!! I think you are fantastic!!!

Way to go!

... Everyone has to be oiled in a special area by the approved "oilers", people who's job is to spray bodybuilders with Pam cooking spray and then rub it everywhere...

How do I apply for that job?!!!

Shame your BF doesn't appreciate those muscley charms of yours...

Hair looks good on you, IMO.
Hey Ford, couldn't you just put on a little fat to smooth out that definition and then just mellow out for awhile? Are you thinking about staying in  competitions?
Just askin cuz I'm curious like that.
Mike

P.S. And I have to agree with others, ya shoulda got first place. I look at the first place winner and don't see chest (especially pecs) that I see in the other two contestants. So I'm wondering what is it about him that made him #1. Any insight?

My best friend said "Honey, you've been robbed by midgets." That was after he pointed out "Oh my god, they showed up wearing the same thong- I'm so embarrassed for them." :D

Many friends have questioned why this guy got 1st place. I've compared photos of the two of us and seen video of the competition. Being as objective as I can I think I look better in still photos but he looks better in motion. I think he won because he is much better at posing and showing his physique. He looked professional, compact and well put together. My presentation looked amateurish. My individual parts might look better but his whole looked better than my parts, at least to the judges. In all honesty if I was judging I would have given the guy who got 3rd first place, myself second and the other guy third. The third place guy had us beat hands down on mass. He's at least 4 inches shorter than I am and probably weighs 20 lbs more. He has huge lats, good chest and big legs. He has the body type that can really put on muscle and he said he weighed 230 lbs last year-- I think it's physically impossible for me to weigh that much given my body type. He could have had better muscle definition though and I'm positive that is why he got 3rd.

Frankly, I'm happy to have placed at all. Both of those guys are personal trainers, had competed before and are not in their 40s. Oh yeah, and their bodies haven't had to deal with HIV and medication side effects for 14 years (I assume). To have started training in January, having never even seen a bodybuilding competition and to end up along side them made me feel great.

Absolutely right on... to compete for the very first time , against pro trainers, and get a top three award is a tremendous accomplishment....I hope you have your trophy in a place of honor....displayed so everyone can see it....maybe even at work...I am sure it will get many conversations started.....Enjoy the fruits of your hard work.
