Hungry ALL the time!
« on: May 07, 2007, 07:38:57 pm »
I don't know what's wrong with me for past few months, I'm HUNGRY all the time! So I've started eating a lot but still I'm hungry 24x7!!!  :'(

I was 160 lbs when I moved to Toronto around 9 months ago, fit and trim, flat belly! AND NOW I'm friggin' 178 lbs with a belly!! That's like gaining 2 lbs a month! Part of it is because I've literally stopped going to gym, but most of it is because I can't stop eating!!

Spoke to my doctor last week and he says that maybe my appetite has increased and I shouldn't be worried! But I'm really worried now especially after my close friends have started calling me a PIG! (And I ain't no pig in any way!)  :(

Has anyone else experienced what I'm going through? How do I control this?

Yes, I had this happen about a year ago.  The sudden weight gain and hunger I contributed to my VL being undetectable for the first time in 14 years so I was not going to complain.  Plus I'd had weight LOSS issues since 2000 (twice bad).  But the sudden gain also raise my blood pressure -- so make sure you monitor this.  I had to start taking some meds for that but it's under control now and I've gotten my weight down to a more normal amount.  My gain was similar to yours over the same period of time.

However, I'm reading your numbers/stats in your sig line and I see we have little in common in where we are with HIV so maybe my situation is not very useful for you.  Still, better to gain a little than to waste away I say!

As another member here often says...

Barbara, please!

I got you beat.  When I first started HAART, I gained a whopping 30 lbs in 3 months.  That's right...10 lbs per month.  It took the rest of the year to get it back off.  My weight still fluctuates a great deal.  It's not unusual for me to go up or down 10 lbs or so in a month.  Sometimes due to appetite changes, sometimes it just does anyway.  My docs always swear it's just appetite or aging, but I know what I know about myself and my body.  Some of it may be just that, but I firmly believe both the HIV and the HAART are contributing to the weight tug-of-war that's going on.

Why you filthy little porker you.

The odd thing with me is that if my weight was a constant svelte 165 lbs (I'm 6 ft.) for the first 10 years of infection, and with a size 40R suit that makes me a perfect male model size.

Lowest wasting experience:  142 lbs. in 2002 (heroin chic works!!!)

Highest weight gain: 180 lbs in 2006

currently at 170 and I'm fine with that, but because of lipo all the weight that should be on my ass is now buried under my abs, not on top like the usual love handles.  There is nothing to grab on my sides, it's all that HIV-ish visceral fat that one simply it seems can't do much about.  I totally blame the meds.

Filthy porker?  Moi?  What...for swiping your line?   ;)

My base weight is 155-160.  This past year alone, I fluctuated up to nearly 200 and down as far as 148, I believe.
Currently hovering near 170, so not too heavy....but could stand to tone up.

I didn't experience any weight gain , prior to starting on meds. And your not on meds yet. My weight was pretty stable, up to a year prior to starting on meds in October of 2003. Why do you feel this necessity to eat or feel hungry all the time. You should bring this to the attention of your doctor. Are you having any issues with depression ?

I went the other way though, I lost 30 pounds of weight 10 months prior to starting on meds, and regained 40 pounds of weight after starting on meds. I also, couldn't stop eating, and the weight rapidly came back on. But I never gained weight prior to meds.

Went from 140 pound , to just a little over 180 pounds in less than 10 months, after starting on meds.

Why did you stop going to the gym? Was it a financial reason ? You may want to reconsider, and rejoin the gym.
Could be other issues too. Depression may make you eat more.

My current weight has been stabilized, for quite some time now at 173 pounds. It's probably  7 pounds more than I would like to be, but I would rather have the weight on me at this point in my life ! Life was hell, when I weighed 140 pounds.

There are many things you can do. keep a daily journal of what your food consumption consists of. Try to make some modifications in that area. Take a close look at what you are eating. Make sure your eating healthy, nutritional food, and try to stay away from all the processed junk food. The processed junk food, will certainly put the weight on.

Weigh yourself once a week, approx. the same time, on the same scale !! And write it down on a calendar. Set a goal weight for yourself, and work toward that goal. That's what I did, and so far it has seemed to work for me.

But, I still think, you shoukld discuss this with your doctor.

Hmm and there could be weight gain problem too after starting HAART! Another HAART news for me! I'm keeping a list of what all physical issues can start after starting meds and the list is scary so far, especially Lipo!

10 lbs a month is scary! I can't handle 2 lbs here!

Hi Ray, Thanks for your suggestions.. I did bring it to my doctor's attention last week and he shrugged it off saying that my appetite might have increased and I shouldn't be too worried about this.. I would again raise this issue when I see him next.

And right now I certainly am not depressed! I have a good job, financially not-so-bad, good friends (though most of them are far away in NYC), I sleep well... I haven't seen any signs of depression in me for quite a few months now.. Though I was seriously depressed immediately after diagnosis for first couple of months!

Junk food - yes I eat out everyday, but I've been eating out for more than a decade now and that had never been an issue! I'm paying for gym every month, but have been procrastinating to go this year.. I don't know, I just don't feel like going to gym anymore.. :(

All I can say is with your lab numbers currently you have a long way to go before having to take meds, so do not needlessly worry.

So you're paying for the gym monthly and not going, huh?  That's your problem right there.

Yep, my gym has been getting $18 a month for me for years, whether I go or not (lately not).  I'm 200 and 6 ft, so I really should be slimming down a bit, problem is I love to eat.

Be it known that much of my weight gain back then was attributable to the wretched old formula Kaletra I was on that required fatty food when I took it.  It made me so nauseated that I had to stay full as a tick on greasy, high calorie food to stave off the sickness.

that improved over time.

Started meds, the holidays came, quit smoking...and voila! 30 lbs over six months.  Going to see the doctor regarding weight/blood pressure on Thursday.  ID Specialist has actually been quite happy with my robust appetite. Grrr!

I'm also suffering from the perpetual munchies.  I could eat a whole bag or chips, most of a cake, box of candy, whatever if I allowed myself to.  I've gained about 5-6 lbs, which is fine in the winter, but it's not winter any more!  I've upped my daily exercise to 30 minutes each morning, which seems to help.  You should see me when I have the REAL munchies... it's scary!

YIKES!!!
I can relate I am hungry all the time and feel the weight slowly no quickly packing on. I do not want this to happen. I am not a gorgeous young thing but hell I do not want to be a fat old pig either. I am in the process of moving and my new place has a great little exercise room in the club house right across the street from my townhouse. I am hoping I can get my ass over there and work this all off. I know the only way for me to loose is to eat salads and run like hell.
