Got my first set of numbers
« on: March 06, 2010, 03:47:57 am »
Well my partner and I got our first set of numbers.

Mine were:
560 CD4
1710 Viral Load

My partners were:
306 CD4
1500 Viral Load

The doc recommended that he start meds in a couple of months and that I wait until my CD4 count gets a little lower.  What your take on that?  Sound like some good advice?

activehiv,

It would be nice to know what your cd4%es are. But based on the numbers given and current guidelines which say to start med when cd4s are between 350 and 500, your partner should start now and you very soon. Your cd4% is important in the beginning because it gives you an indication of the overall health of your immune system (normal for hiv- is between 30 and 60). A cd4% of less than 14 is an aids diag.

Good luck with your decision.

Hi Active,

I agree with what V said about percentage it would be nice to know where you stood there. But I'm amazed at your relatively low VL. In my non-doctorate opinion, I would like to see another couple tests before yall went to meds, especially for you (cd4 506). Your doctor said wait "a couple of moths to see", but that's barely enough time for another round of tests, much less 2 where you would have a better baseline to go by.

Question to the group- Isn't it slightly unusual to see a Vl this low early on?

Isn't a high VL standard right after acute infection?

A couple things surprise me about these numbers.  I, too, thought viral loads were almost always really high in acute infection.  The other thing is how both of you have very similar numbers.  Your viral loads are almost basically the same.  Your CD4's aren't that far off--especially if his were just a little lower on this test for some reason due to a cold, infection, or just stress.

I would be interested to know the % as well.  It will be interesting to see your next set of numbers.  You could possibly see one person's body controlling the viral load really well during acute infection, but both?  For anyone out there:  Could their numbers be telling of how strong or weak their virus is?

Regardless, I wish you and your partner all the best.  It is good you both have each other to navigate through this.

One other thing---  If you don't mind, could you describe the flu-like illness you had after infection?  I always hear people describe seroconversion like having the flu.  I've always thought mine was more like a bad case of mono.  I was sooooo tired with very sore and swollen lymph nodes all over.  It was difficult to wash my hair or shave due to having no energy.  The sore and swollen lymph nodes lasted a few years.  They were in my neck, my shoulders, chest, and groin.

I'm just curious when you and others say flu-like, are you talking about the same symptoms I'm talking about?  When I think about the flu, I think of feeling run-down with a fever and maybe a cough.  On the other hand, I've heard some HIVers say they never experienced any kind of seroconversion sickness, so I guess we're all different.
