Since I was dubbed Media Coordinator a couple of months ago, I’ve been trying to generate interest in AMG from the SF media outlets, including a half-dozen TV stations. While response has been minimal (nearly nil, in fact) I have gotten one auto-generated response and one personal reply from an assistant who said it sounded intriguing and she’d pass it on to the news team. Like last year in Montreal, it’s possible they may call at any time and ask to interview us or cover part of the Gathering.

My feeling is that the part they’d most be interested in would be our visit to the National AIDS Memorial Grove on Friday morning. The potential problem is that any of us, understandably, might not want to be on TV, or want such a personal time to be documented on video. While it’s possible that coverage might only be local, there’s also the possibility that as network affiliates, they might share the story with other affiliates.

What does everyone think? Okay to bring in the news team? Ask them to shoot from one angle so not everyone is visible? Since this is taking place in public, we really can’t control what they do, but if I tell them don’t bother coming I’m sure they would respect that. I’m not so sure it would be the same if I said, “Please video us, but don’t show these certain people on TV.”

Ideas? I want to be respectful of people’s wishes, but after a certain point I can’t guarantee anyone’s anonymity.

I would prefer that the ceremony at the AIDS Memorial Grove not be a media event.

Edited to add:
My initial comment was too wishy-washy. Let me amend it to say that I definitely do not want this event covered by media cameras. I would find it intrusive, and it would make me very uncomfortable.

I have no objections to Creighton writing a news story about this event.

Thanks Creighton for your work...I personally would be fine with media coverage of our gathering at the Memorial and any positive results regarding this coverage but if there are those who would feel uncomfortable with it then I think it would be prudent to respect their wishes and forego media coverage.

I have no problem with media coverage, but would prefer the Memorial Service to be a private event.

I have been on TV during the local coverage of the 25th anniversary of AIDS and have submitted several articles re: RWCA reauthorization to every newspaper and radio station in 5 counties in this area. My name and face is known as a person living with AIDS and I refuse to allow you or anyone else to benefit from putting me on public display again. Have the best day

I have no problem with it at all, but I realize it puts you in a "tight" situation, since there are some who certainly will have a problem with it.

Perhaps the Memorial Service is not the best place for coverage....maybe something at the hotel, like they did in Montreal with Jan?

I'll sign any kind of release you need, sweetie.

There is no guarantee it will be done with taste. They shoot much more than needed and edit to please. In 1993 or 1994, I brought California Governor, Pete Wilson and Assemblyman Richard Mountjoy to the Sheraton LAX to be keynote speakers on the future of doing business in California on my talk show. Cal Comp was the corporate sponsor and the 200 guests were Commercial line insurance brokers, company owners, and top management personnel. Television did not show up, I was a radio program so other radio did not show and print news didn't bother either.

I was one of 6 persons living with HIV on the 25 Year Anniversary of AIDS show on News channel 50. I was taped for 5 minutes, they used 2 sentences and I looked like death warmed over.

It took a lot of work to get the same newschannel to tape our Town Hall Meeting on RWCA. This was my first volunteer project after joining the Sonoma County Commission on AIDS and I had not finished the web site at this time. The crew arrived, unloaded their truck, set up the transmitter and then, a question was asked... "Does anyone have any confidentiality issues for being in the room while the event is taped?" One person said yes, they would be uncomfortable being on the program. That crew sure loaded that truck fast and was gone in no time. This coverage could have made a significant difference in rallying support to keep the $1.6 million RWCA funding in Sonoma County. As of March 1, 2007 Sonoma County receives only $628,000.00 of that amount. In 2 more years there will be no Title I funding for the programs which support HIV care and services in Sonoma, Santa Clara, and Sacramento Counties. I fought that battle everyday for over 2 years, and still lost.

Last year a new neighbor moved in. They are very nice people and have become friends. The day they moved in, the pretty lady Kristie asked me if I was the one on the front page of the paper with AIDS. I said yes, was there last night for a BBQ and am going over in a few for a beer. I am tired of being Michael, from Forestville, with AIDS.

We spoke earlier about a pozcast at Meet and Greet and I believe I said, I would be happy to say hello to Forum Members and that, I would enjoy. Have the best day

The visit to the AIDS memorial site will be very emotional.
It has been for me, both in Toronto and in Montreal.

For the first time in almost twenty years I was able to cry over my lost friends, my lost life, my lost body ...this is very private and I only want to share it with the members of our group. Believe me, it is very much of a massive catharsis.

I have no problem though with being on TV or being interviewed. I know, being a European puts me in a different situation. But some coverage will let people know the plague is still killing people, but on the other hand uniting those who are infected in a way rarely seen in society.

I have to agree with Hermie. "Uniting those who are infected in a way rarely seen in society", is what AMG is all about for me. Please count me in on any media exposure that our unique event may attract.

Hey Creighton,

Hi sweetheart, here is your TV News Photographer... Ben Aronoff, I have met him a couple of times on HIV issues. He says he is an award winning cinematographer but not to get too impressed because the award piece was on a chicken.

Petaluma was the egg capital of the world once. I think there is a joke here somewhere.

Anyway, if the station will let him, I'm sure he would do this piece well. I will PM the email and contact info. Have the best day

Count me out of any media exposure.

My job is still sensitive enough that it could create problems for me in the short/long term.

I am in favor of any media coverage. There has been so little this decade...I am all for it.
