Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Nervous After getting hiv-1 test at insurance...

Hello to everyone,  Here is my story.  I am currently 21 years old and am very nervous about my hiv-1 test.  Back a few years ago I went through a mode of being a "whore" and not using protection most of the time.  I have been so scared over the years that I have hiv, I know I do have depression and anxiety and it keeps me tired alot and gives me some of the same symptoms of hiv.  But, anyways on to the point.... My car insurance company called me the other day and asked if i was interested in life insurance.. I said yes and proceeded up to the company to fill out paper work.  After she asked a ton of question she pulled out a clear tube that said Hiv-1 on the side and had a cotton pad on a stick... She told me to place it between my gum and cheek for 2 minutes then break off the stick and place bad in tube.  I then signed the consent and was on my way.  At first I thought this was to test for tobacco until I started thinking about what the tube said.  I am now so scared that they are going to call and give me bad news in a few days!!!  Help guys!

You also have not indicated what exactly you mean by saying you were a "whore."

Did you have unprotected intercourse? Once? Many times? If so, when was the last time in relation to when your HIV test was done? Any other info?

Please clarify.

Sorry for being so brief.  I mean "whore" by I was stupid like most other teenagers are now days and had multiple encounters of un-protected intercourse with females (around 10 unprotected, all were different girls).  Now I have been with my current s/o for a year and am hoping I do not have hiv because If I do she probably does too.  I just feel like i have hiv though, I am tired/sluggish even with 8/10 hours sleep a day( I work nights).  Last year I was sick at least once a month.  I have been tested for STD's right before me and my s/o got together and I had chlamydia which I got treated.  The Hiv test was done on monday, it is now wednesday... when should I hear by?  I am assuming they will call me if it is positive to let me know?  Like I said, it is for my life insurance policy through my auto insurance company.  Thanks!

It can take hours to two weeks to get your results back and if you test positive they will advice you.

You know, this is one of the ways that hiv continues to spread. You and your girlfriend obviously never got tested for hiv together BEFORE you decided to not use condoms. People think that they only need to use condoms when having one night stands or going to sex workers but nothing could be further from the truth. 

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Your girlfriend also needs to be tested for hiv - regardless of your result - before you two continue to have unprotected intercourse. It is entirely possible (unless she's NEVER had unprotected intercourse with anyone else) for her to be positive and you to be negative. I'd been with the same partner for a year and a half before I discovered I was hiv positive, but he remained negative despite our having unprotected before my diagnosis.

Yes, please do calm down. Hiv test take anywhere from twenty minutes to two weeks to come back. Rest assured that if your result is positive, they will be in touch. Sometimes, if the result is negative, they don't, so no news is good news.

Well no word yet, and its been 2 weeks tomorrow but, something has got me worried... I received a packet in the mail with my insurance premiums on friday and it had a sticky note attached to it that read... "I have been trying to get in touch with you by phone but have been unsuccessful doing so, please call me as soon as possible"  I don't know if she just needs more info or if I got bad results... Would the agent themselves call me or the lab who did the test?  Thanks for any responses!
