Resistant HIV strain, has anyone gotten re-exposed to a worse Strain?  Is this a real threat or very very rare?  I have heard from Dr.s that it almost does not exist, but yet there is info that resistant strains exist.

is it harder to catch a resistant strain if you are on meds

if you are not on meds does it make it esp. dangerous

i heard that first 3 years after being infected it is possible but extremely rare to catch a resistant strain but after that time it is impossible, something about virus changes

any info

any one catch a new resistant strain

after already being infected

That would mean someone was going around having unprotected sex now wouldn't it? or a continued IV drug use? If it is possible to contract another strain.

The way I understand it, in a very simple way.  If you are not on meds, you can get a different strain.  Once you are in a controlled state, on meds, and doing well, the chances of getting a different strain are very slim to almost none.

If the resistant strain is resistant to the meds you are taking, it will invade your bloodstream and reproduce without finding any obstacle to its replication (as it is resistant to the meds in your bloodstream).

Sometimes when i see Question's like this i wonder if you really try to find out by asking your doctor. That is where you should have check out. But I will give you the answer from my training since  work with the ryan white planning council and we keep up to date of this kind of stuff.

YES, you can recieve another type of virus strain through unsafe sex. or dirty needle us or blood transfertion.  Doesn't neccessarily have to be a resistance strain. can be another strain that is just stronger than what your meds can keep in control.  Someone who has built an immunity to your meds and you have sex and it's unsafe.???   chances are you will have to take double the meds to keep both in check.  Why even take the chance.  Why put yourself through more than your already going through and take the chance to put someone else through it. I for one will never have unsafe sex again no matter what. I will not put someone through what i went through nor do i want anything worse than what i got.

remember also, there are alot of the new resistance strains are also combined with Hep c.  So do you really want to go through that. USE THAT CONDOMN.

It should be noted that "super-infection" is not a huge deal. The total number of confirmed cases of super-infection on a global basis is no more than a couple of dozen.

Rather the risk of contracting an STD such as syphilis should weigh more heavily on one's mind than super-infection.

Here's a good summary of what's known so far:

Dual HIV Infection

Here's a detailed case report of resistance acquired through superinfection:

HIV drug resistance acquired through superinfection

It's rare but it could happen.

this is basically what the Dr. told me and he is head of clinic of hiv for 4000 people... "It should be noted that "super-infection" is not a huge deal. The total number of confirmed cases of super-infection on a global basis is no more than a couple of dozen.  Rather the risk of contracting an STD such as syphilis should weigh more heavily on one's mind than super-infection."   thanks matt

so no one actually has had this happen? to them personally?
