Life expectancy pls say your opinion

Hi guys

               Regardless from what i read from the new research yesterday that concerned about life expectancy with dose that living with Hiv ,the authors said that dose who started ARVs meds with below 100 can only live the avareage life of 10yrs,so dose they mean that for most of us here that started with 20 cd4 can not even reach that 5yrs .pls say your own opinion

Not sure which study you mean ... but if the one on the home page here for today, then they're meaning ten [10] fewer or less years, not total years of life expectancy.

Anyway, I'd focus on LIVING many years and not how few 'might' be left.

    that's from todays study, pls explain to me exact what they really  mean.is't 10yrs from the date of explosure or starting ARVs meds?

so guy read this and explain it for me cos i'm still confuse with this .                  HIV-positive people who didn't start ARV treatment until their CD4s dropped to 100 were expected to live 10 fewer years than people who started therapy when their CD4s were above 200. The authors also determined that HIV-positive people with a history of injection drug use were expected to live 10 fewer years than those who never used injection drugs.

I don’t know. I'd guess its possible to have a normal lifespan if on meds and they are working.
The issues probably are other health concerns that can come into the mix, like meds causing
higher cholesterol levels and thus heart disease. That could reduce the life expectancy.
But then, smoking does the same as well as being over weight or driving without wearing your seat belt.

Todays meds are very effective in keeping the virus in check and stopping hiv from doing its damage.
So taking care of those other health issues can become more important since problems like high
cholesterol can become the life threatening concern.

I've had HIV for 24 years and pretty much healthy. Will I die of AIDS? More than likely not.

Sanitex,

I was diagnosed in July 1987, many of my friends were dying.

I was told to get my affairs in order, make the trip I always wanted to do, in other words made the most of everything.

In my situation I was expected to live from 6 months to 15/18 months range.

Even with your low CD4 count, with today's drug regiment it will help you live longer and even see retirement.

Try not to worry and take care of your self and one a day at the time.

The study that you quote DOESN'T say that.

What it says is quite the opposite in meaning:

HIV-positive people who didn't start ARV treatment until their CD4s dropped to 100 were expected to live 10 fewer years than people who started therapy when their CD4s were above 200.

The key to the study findings really are here btw:

The researchers predicted that a 20-year-old person starting ARV treatment between 1996 and 1999, the early years of combination ARV therapy, could be expected to live an additional 36 years, to the age of 56. This increased significantly, however, as time passed. A 20-year-old who started treatment between 2003 and 2005 was expected to live an additional 49 years, to the age of 69.

The average life expectancy for a 20-year-old who remains HIV negative, at least in industrialized nations, is an additional 60 years—with death occurring, on average, at the age of 80.

Please also remember that this is only a projection and not an exact determination of life span for any HIV+ individual.

While I agree none of us knows when we will end, I don't think it's pointless to worry about it. If you care for someone who is depending on you, if you have some once-in-a-lifetime projects, retirement plans, etc. you might want to have a little better idea of whether you are likely to make it old. That affects decisions you have to make today. I'm sure there are plenty of other good reasons to be concerned with it.

Hon I could walk out my door today and get hit by a car. . . what Im saying is no one know when the end come do not worry about tomoorow... live in the moment... plan for the future but live in the day!!!! Rememeber YOU ARE NOT A STUDY you are a person and since when did people do the expected...  blow their minds and live to be 120 years old!!! I going to :)

I agree with living for today and remembering that there may be a tomorrow, but there is also something to be said about listening to the statistics.  Sometimes they can make you determined to not be one of them or they can rule your life if you let them. 

My theory is this...from the moment we take our first breath, we begin the process of dying.  Life is not about the first breath you take or the last breath, its about all the breaths in between.   :)

I've said once or twice in my life when asked what my life expectancy is that "I don't know. I lost my death clock. I have no intention of dying so I suppose I'll be an enigma and live forever"

80's sound good to me! I really try not to think about any of that because yes anything could happen... I just try and picture living as long as I possibly can stand it!!!!!
