Good Day to all,

I have read through some of the postings and would like to ask some questions for clarifications:-

1. I know that this is a credible website, good job. May I know if there has been any cases of people who tested negative at 13 weeks went on to test positive at 6 months in this forum or even patients treated by your panel of medical advisors?
2. If there are RARE cases regarding the above, what about negative 6 months and positive later?

The reason I am asking this is because of the fact my doctor says he cannot assure me of 100% status of the test result, therefore I might delay taking the test.

If there were a reason for you to test out longer than 3 months your doctor would have advised you. If you are not on chemo, not taking antirejection drugs for a transplant or your not a chronic IV drug abuser then a three month test is conclusive for you.

I am not under those drugs or treatment you mentioned. Its just that my doctor just wont commit to the 3 months conclusive results. Regarding my earlier questions, any specific answers? Thanks

unprotected vaginal and oral sex with CSW. I had flu like symptoms at 4th weeks.I tested out to 10 weeks, negative. When I asked my doctor if a 13 weeks would be conclusive, he said no doctor would ever say that. So now I am delaying my test until a time frame I know it would be conclusive. Please advise

Your doctor is wrong.

13 weeks is conclusive, has been for years. Given that we've ruled out the circumstances which would affect the window period, you're good to go and get tested.

In fact I would suggest that given your risk (unprotected vaginal is low risk) and that you've tested negative at 10 weeks you can be confident of a negative result at 13 weeks. Very confident.

I've never known a 10 week negative to change to 13 week positive.

I agree with Matty. Your doctor's comments are long outdated. Other than in situations involving IV drug use, treatment for cancer or a severely compromised immune system for some other like serious reason such as a transplant, 13 weeks has long been accepted as a reliable testing point. That's because of the increased earlier accuracy of the tests in use.

So a negative at 13 weeks is sufficient to let you know you're HIV negative.

Are you guys saying that no one has tested positive after a 3 months negative?( i am referring back to my first query)

No, I am not saying no one has ever tested positive after 13 weeks. The (very) rare exceptions are those where the circumstances I have mentioned previously were involved -- IV drug use or a SEVERELY impaired immune system due to circumstances such as treatment for cancer or an organ transplant.

And lest you start wondering about whether you might have such an impaired immune system, when that occurs it's quite clear that something very serious is happening within the body and not merely a cold or not feeling well or swelling lymph nodes. It's the body in a state of near collapse.

Your fears notwithstanding, nothing you are reporting leads me to believe that any of the above apply to you.

Okay, I understand that Andy, but it still strikes fear in me everytime I read about conflicting window period of HIV testing. The truth is I will be getting my 32th week HIV test results.....yes it has been that long!!!!! My doctor cannot inform me what generation is the test, so even if its the old one, would it still be reliable? I am praying that my result will be negative......

Hi Matt, just out of curiosity, let's say i have severely compromised immune system or that i am an IV drug user, and i test -ve at 24 weeks, is it result conclusive? Has this forums seen anybody who test -ve at 24 weeks but test +ve later?

We really don't like this kind of speculative question. We prefer to deal with the specifics of actual situations. Nevertheless I can tell you that we have never within the Forum had anyone who tested positive at such a late date.

Nor have I personally known anyone who tested positive that late.

Anyhow as promised I now annouce my 32 week test result, its........NEGATIVE!!!!!
Thank you all who has helped me through this and i have learned my lesson well. No more 'playing' around and putting myself at risk.

It's always good news to get a negative test result. Even when it's expected. Now you can get on with your life.

Also, for future reference, all of the current HIV tests in use, regardless of generation, will give an accurate result at 13 weeks.
