Needing some advice for my brother
« on: November 17, 2012, 01:48:35 pm »
Hello, I am posing this question for my dear brother who for some reason tried to create an account but was denied. So I am hoping that someone can help answer his questions because he is needlessly stressing out.

About a month ago he was driving to work at 4:30 AM. He was doing 65 on the freeway, a drunk homeless guy decided to walk right in front of his car and unfortunately was hit by my brother. If this wasn't bad enough the guy went THROUGH the windshield and landed on the passenger's side of my brother's car! Thankfully all he had was a broken leg and no further damage. My brother's car however was covered in splatters of homeless dude's blood.

The ambulance came, took homeless guy away. However my brother discovered that he had little cuts, not major but resembling little paper cuts all over his arms from the broken glass from the windshield. The cuts are not deep and did not break the skin however there was one little cut...about half an inch that broke the skin and although the doctor's at the hospital told him he's got ".004%" chance of being infected...he's still freaking out about it (homeless guy's blood did get on his arm at the time of the accident)!

Btw he did get tested a week after this incident...but he's still worried. And I am worried.

Please could someone (anyone really) please tell him he is being ridiculous and just stop worrying? He's lost 15 pounds over this already. To exacerbate things...we read over the "LESSONS" link on this website and it clearly states that HIV is transmitted through open cuts and lesions etc etc. which made him freak out.

We do not know if homeless guy was HIV or not.

I've moved this thread over here because your brother is worried. BUT he has not tested positive for HIV and I don't expect him to test positive if he does get tested.

This is all about what ifs and fears with nothing grounded in fact.

Strictly for his peace of mind he can get tested. I don't expect anything other than a negative result. He can test initially at 6 weeks or he can wait for 3 months and get a conclusive negative result.

Storm,

Are you hiv positive yourself?

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
