Every single American benefitted in some way from legislation he crafted. Every single man woman child.
So comes the end of the Kennedy brothers, for those that lived through JFK and RFK's death.

I'm not a big fan of Ted Kennedy... it seems the good die young... so I thought he would live tobe at least 100 plus... Robert Kennedy was the best out of the whole batch... I have sympathies his family... may God have mercy on his soul...

He championed people with much less than he had. As he aged, I got the feeling that he was really trying to make amends for his earlier failings. But I think we all do that, don't you?

Like many great men, Ted Kennedy was himself a bundle of contradictions. His personal life was touched by tragedies and failures, but he achieved greatness by transcending those setbacks in the service of his country. A man of privilege, he was a staunch supporter of the downtrodden, including the LGBT community when there were precious few allies in Congress. He was an early proponent of funding for HIV/AIDS research and care in the 1980s, battling conservative religious hostility and White House indifference to the emerging epidemic. In the early 1990’s he became an early supporter of gay rights legislation and voted to strip “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” from the National Defense Authorization Act in 1993. He stood up as one of only fourteen Senators to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. During the 2004 debate on a proposed federal constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, Kennedy said:
“We all know what this issue is about. It’s not about how to protect the sanctity of marriage, or how to deal with activist judges. It’s about politics and an attempt to drive a wedge between one group of citizens and the rest of the country, solely for partisan advantage … The Constitution has never been used as a tool to entrench currently popular views at the expense of an unpopular minority – and it should not be used that way now.”

He certainly had a tremendous impact on the senate, and the country. RIP Mr. Kennedy. :'( You'll be greatly missed.

His personal life may have been questionable, but he was a damn fine politician who unabashedly stood up for what was right. I'm not sure who, if anyone, will fill his shoes now that he's gone.

Ted ended up accomplishing more than Jack and Bobby combined. Hundreds of passed Congressional bills bear his signature. There is no one in the Senate who did more for gay and health issues. We will not see his like again.

In the very dark days of AIDS Teddy Kennedy secured the funding that covers over half the people living with HIV in America today. For that alone I owe him my health and my respect. All of us living with HIV do.

My partner Kurt was going to be interviewed by an ABC news team today about how Ted Kennedy affected his life. Now, unfortunately, Ted has died and the documentary is cancelled.
Ted Kennedy was a suporter of Ryan White funding...something dear to the hearts of everyone here.

It sounds like an even better reason to do the documentary. Many folks don't know what or how much he really accomplished. Hopefully, Kurt will still get to tell his story.

Senator Kennedy's accomplishments will remain legendary, but what I lament the most, with his passing, is the death of a true American. Being far from perfect, did not deter him from becoming one of the greatest champions for the people and he utilized his considerable resources, to better the lives of all Americans. I believe that he epitomized the true American spirit of government, for the people, by the people.
We can only hope that other leaders may rise to his level of championship.

Ted Kennedy was indeed what I would call a true American.
Although he came from privilege, he never forgot those who were not as fortunate.
He sought common ground even among those with whom he disagreed.
He was a statesman rather than a man of rhetoric.
He wasn't perfect, he had his flaws and made his mistakes. He was, after all, not a demigod. He was human.
Someone will have some very large shoes to try to fill.

He was the strongest voice we had in the healthcare reform debate. I pray that someone will step up to the plate. He left some VERY BIG shoes to fill......
