Updates:

9/20/12  Had the EMG - Good news is no neuropathy; bad news is sciatica - doc wants follow up CT/MRI done - thinks some type of issue w/ disc in back....

9/24/12 Had consult w/ gastroenterologist - thinks I may have either a) worsened tear in esophagus; b) have ulcer(s); c) ????
He will be doing an upper and lower GI on me....

11/5/12 Will get upper and lower GI (doc did not want to do it now as he feels it is too close to when I had the GI bleed - and he doesn't want to take a chance [translation - fuck up and get sued - lol] of causing the bleed to recur or get worse.)

In the meantime, I am to continue on my daily Nexium... (which my insurance company gave a bitch of a time giving to me.... required doctor justification and pre-authorization)

I guess you know you are getting old when the number of pills you have to take on a daily basis goes up.....
Just over 4 years ago I was on "0" pills -
Now, I take 8 pills a day.... but it could be worse...

Dear Phil,

This has been a roller coaster thread ,so to live it ,well all I can say is look after your self and I hope all the ? are answered. Also hope you are able to follow up your experience with the nursing care.It still makes me so mad when I hear these things, prolonged shoddy nursing is sadistic ,plain and simple.

Hope work helps in your recovery all the best

And the hospital and other bills related to the "event" have started hitting (and thankfully clearing) the insurance company:

Service                           Amount Billed        Insurance Paid        Phil Pays
GI Doc Consultation         $    360.00               $   150.00                  $  45.00
ER Doctor                       $  1,402.00               $   450.00                     -0-
Aventura Hospital            $22,081.00               $8,000.00                  $300.00
Additional Labs -ER         $     464.00                $  275.00                     -0-

Still waiting on ambulance bill (which should be around $700 - w/ insurance covering 100%) and additional hospital doctor bills (who knows what those will be, but I shouldn't incur any out pocket from them)

Total Billed to Date     Insurance Paid             Phil Billed
                                        $24,307.00             $8,875.00                 $345.00

I'm very grateful to have good insurance.....
Considering that by the end of this year they will have paid out over $28,059 for my care (including unexpected hospital visit) with me paying about $1,200 out of pocket - I really can't complain. And I do try to keep their expenses down as much as possible. I'm also grateful to work for a large employer (so that my high cost of care is not felt as much in the bottom line they pay for group insurance coverage) - Small employers would really take a hit (as the lower the "N," meaning employees and higher the average cost of care the higher their premium)....

As it is, my employer pays $8,600 per year for coverage for each employee ($716 month) - and it went up a lot since last year....

When I was younger, I never thought to ask about things like benefits - I just wanted to know about $$$$ in my paycheck..... As you get older (and particularly when you have a chronic medical condition or two or three or....) insurance benefits become much more important to take into consideration (as does retirement plan, disability insurance, life insurance, etc. - and of course..... days off  ;D  )

You're correct, you really can't complain about the small amount you had to pay considering the total amount.  Have they pinpointed the problem yet?

Not yet --
I go in November 7 for upper and lower GI --- hopefully that will give them an idea about what might be going on...
In the meantime - I'm getting by.... just eating a bit lighter and going a little bit easier on my schedule...
Still having pain in abdomen area ---- but dealing with it (can't take Advil - so, I am sticking w/ Tylenol - and can only take that a couple of times a day - but it doesn't really do too much for abdomen pain)

I'm very grateful to have good insurance.....

No joke! My insurance has been billed for nearly $90,000 so far this year for chemo treatments. Pharmacy claims, they have paid over $24,000. I've been billed my out of pocket $2,000 plus $1,000 so far in pharmacy copays.

Once you hit out of pocket, the incoming EOBs make you smile. Insurance is my sugar daddy. I hope you're feeling better Phil.  8)

Hi phil,

Didn't see your update until today.
Speedy recovery and hopefully no new pain-in-the-neck discoveries!

Glad to hear that you have good insurance.
I have good insurance, but have to pay for it myself. $13000.00 per year and they are seeking a 14% increase next year!
They still take a big loss on me.
(could go on forever on this topic but...)

Take care!

PS. Hope I will be able to meet you and other members of the site at the AMG next year. Sounds like fun. Still searching on the gatherings forum to learn more about it.
Have yet to figure out why it is called "Aids Med Gathering". (at least the "Meds" part.) Sorry mind wondering here...

Hi Mitch:
The name of these forums is AIDSmeds Forums (see top of page); thus, we call the get together AMG (AIDSmeds Gathering).

It has been held in the past in Washington DC, London, Seattle, Boston, Mexico City, Toronto... etc.. and an unofficial gathering in Las Vegas.

Keep reading through the AMG topic area and you will get a wealth of info about it.

Thanks for the well wishes. They are appreciated.

My My how fuzzy-brained oblivious I am!!!
Believe it or not, I just get on the "Poz" site and go to the forums without even noticing the title they were given! Ugh!
Thanks for clearing that up!
(thank you as well wolfie!)

As I stated on a different thread, I am originally from Minnesota and think I may be related to Rose Nyland.

Hope you all at least got a chuckle.
