Idle Curiosity part 1: Vegetarians?
« on: August 19, 2006, 07:30:51 pm »
Just curious. And does one say "Are you vegetarian?" or "Are you a vegetarian?"

Jay
Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

Either is acceptable

Hi Jay,

You don't have my main reason for being veggie on your list - spiritual. And no, my reason doesn't fit under the morals option. Strictly speaking though, if more than one option could be ticked, I'd tick two and three plus the one I mention.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Added the spiritual option.

I grew up vegetarian. My grandmother -- married at 14, educated surreptitiously until the age of 10, gentle dictator of my childhood's kitchen, great chef (though she would have scoffed at the term) -- would have been horrified to find even a smuggled egg in the house. And the cook, rigid Rajasthani Brahmin, would have walked out in horror if he'd discovered that I was having omelettes and egg-filled cakes made in his kitchen.

Oh, I've tried pretty much every kind of meat. Most were not tasty. A lot of it is the texture/consistency thing.

I'm glad my morals, now, coincide with my habits. So much easier.

Hmm, that was quick, two others already ticked spiritual before me. ::)

Ah, so you're lacto-vegetarian in the Hindu style? Me too. :)

You're all depraved plant killers. For shame!

As a boy from the Aussie bush I enjoy nothing more than finding another living creature, depriving it of its life, peeling off its skin, heating it up and then eating it.

;D

I heard a term the other day to describe "vegetarians" who eat fish: "vegequarians".

Well, I've given up leather completely. (I'm not majorly into the "leather scene" at all, but I do find it exciting now and again.) So, I have a leather jacket or two, a few belts and a few shoes, and, erm, a few other leather goodies -- use 'em while they last, not to be replaced.

So what do you use to secure the cheap trade you bring home to the bed?

Natural-fiber rope works just fine. And my old neck-ties.

Omnivore would probably "classify" me, as I love veggies as well as meat (although I have been trying to decrease my red meat intake.  Kinda hard to do with a wife and son who love their beef)

I LOVE MEAT, but 2 years ago I stopped eating beef and pork because my body just didn't digest it well.  I eat turkey, chicken and fish. I dropped 20lbs as soon as I stopped eating beef and pork...........I miss it though!

My stepfather was a butcher and brought home the BEST cuts of meat and I still say that my dying meal is going to be a big juicy porterhouse steak and a baked potato!

For those interested in the relationship between humans and the food they eat, read michael pollan's books:
http://www.michaelpollan.com/omnivore.php is his latest offering.

Matty, if given a choice I go for silk myself but I've always found that letting them lose was more fun ;D ;D
