With audible murmurs of "This is no way to live," "What the hell am I doing here—I hate it here," and "Fuck this place. Fuck this horrible place," all 8.4 million citizens in each of the five boroughs packed up their belongings and told reporters they would rather blow their brains out with a shotgun than spend another waking moment in this festering cesspool of filth and scum and sadness.

By 5:15 p.m. there was gridlock traffic on the outbound sides of the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, and the area's three major airports were flooded with New Yorkers, all of whom said they wanted to go anyplace where the pressure of 20 million tons of concrete wasn't constantly suffocating them.

"I always had this perverted sense of pride because I was managing to scrape by here," said Brooklyn resident Andrew McQuade, who, after watching two subway rats gnawing on a third bloody rat carcass, finally determined that New York City was a giant sprawling cancer. "Well, fuck that. I don't need to pay $2,000 a month to share a doghouse-sized apartment with some random Craigslist dipshit to prove my worth. I want to live like a goddamn human being."...

I commented on this ranking earlier in the thread about moving to another city. Oddly the part(s) of the city a tourist would encounter are actually the most clean. They should see other parts. Personally I'm fond of urban grit.

Meh, this report is definitely not accurate.  They ranked Miami at number 8 based solely on their appraisal of the hideous city of Miami Beach, which is not even one tenth of the Miami-Dade area (less than 90k inhabitants out of the 2.5+ mill in the city).  Moreover, it is probably not even based on Miami Beach --they probably used South Beach for their ranking-- a place that nowadays is a filth, and which many of the locals don't visit as frequently as we once did.  It has become a den of homeless, working girls, thugs, and other delights.

The majority of this boring city is primarily suburban sprawl.  And, as a matter of fact, just a couple of years ago Forbes ranked this place number one amongst the cleanest cities in America (which is probably the only thing we got going on, as we have huge rates of foreclosure, unemployment, crime, etc).

I don't know about the live music or vivid nightlife, but Atlanta does have some cool neighborhoods.  Of course, the cities that do have all these things are generally significantly bigger and aren't as cheap as Atlanta is (to live in).

I haven't been to NYC in a decade, but I remember being impressed with how clean it was overall.  Certainly, all the trash set out on the curbs waiting for pickkup didn't help, but my impression was that it would be much dirtier overall.  As for the air, I recall what we call 'pollution boogers' from all the diesel and exhaust; that's always a bit nasty!

New Orleans throws a parade when they get a cat out of a tree.  So despite street sweeping constantly there is always debris all over the place.  I knew it would be number one with a bullet.

Funny thing is you really don't know dirty unless you were in NYC in the 80's.

I'm also surprised that DC didn't make that list -- there are some really vile parts in that city, though you really should have seen it in the 70's.

I'm surprised NYC did as well as it did.  I can personally attest to the fact that it is indeed expensive as hell to live here.  One reason I am looking forward to getting out!

I also remember South Beach when it was all full of elderly people on welfare, with just a five block stretch of partial gentrification on Ocean Drive.
