possible exposure to hiV?
« on: January 03, 2012, 06:26:44 pm »
hi,

I think i may have had a possible exposure  to hiv. i went to a strip club where the stripper spat on my penis and gave me a lap dance. she also stroked my penis through my underpants.  then i went to a brothel where i received a hand job. this was all in the same night. the hand job was protected for almost the whole time except for the last few minutes. the next day i noticed some cuts underneath the foreskin of my penis. im not sure if these were there during the time these events occurred. what worries me is that these cuts may have provided a possible entry for the virus if they were there at the time of exposure because that is a mucous membrane. i am also uncircumsized and am aware that that puts you at an increased risk. but does it also in my case? any advice would help. Thanks

HIV is transmitted by;
Unprotected penetrative anal and/or vaginal sex
Sharing works with other IV drug abusers
Mother to child

Saliva is not infectious and nothing you did put you at risk of contracting HIV.

thank you! just another quick question. does this hold true even if the hooker that gave me a handjob had cuts that got exposed to my cuts underneath the foreskin? or if the spit had blood? I didn't check for any of these at the moment. thanks

HIV is unable to reproduce outside its living host (unlike many bacteria or fungi, which may do so under suitable conditions), except under laboratory conditions; therefore, it does not spread or maintain infectiousness outside its host.

that applies to the spit part i guess. but not the exposure to possible cuts on the hand? also if it doesn't spread outside the host, how does sharing needles put a person at risk? the needle is outside the host once the other person injects themselves.

Worrying about transmission via cuts on the hand of each person is very much in the far fetched domain of "what ifs." I've never known of transmission to have happened in that manner.

As for the sharing of needles intravenously, (sharing of syringes/needles). drugs  directly into veins.  The drugs themselves do not cause HIV infection unless they are contaminated with blood from someone else.  It is the act of sharing needles which occurs in the setting of intravenous drug use that puts everyone that shares at risk for HIV.  Anytime a syringe is used, the syringe is contaminated with blood from the person that used it.  If the syringe is then re-used, that small amount of possibly HIV-infected blood that is left in the syringe can infect the second, third, fourth, etc., users of the syringe with HIV.

The syringe provides a protected environment for HIV in which it can remain viable.

Oh.  I see. Thank you for the replies. One last question. So in my situation would you recommend getting tested ? And do you also believe that I was never at any risk sir?

Those were no-risk incidents. I don't see any need for HIV testing.

Get on with your life.

Thanks Andy! This forum and what you guys do is amazing. You seem very knowledgable about this topic. Are you an hiv specialist or counselor?
