Wisdom Teeth Extraction/HIV Risk
« on: January 19, 2009, 10:33:52 pm »
Hi

I have a new boyfriend who has just had his wisdom teeth extracted - what are the risks of HIV from kissing or if he goes down on me?

How long should we wait before doing anything like this?

To elaborate, his surgery was a week ago. I'm assuming he's healing OK, and has the usual blood clots in the holes and dissolvable stitches. This is what usually happens - blood clots form in the holes soon after surgery, and the stitches dissolve gradually as healing takes place. In the meantime, you're not supposed to suck on anything or drink using a straw, because the suction could displace the clots.

I know that the risks from kissing are zero and the risks from oral sex are minimal under normal circumstances, but am interested to know what happens when recent oral surgery is thrown into the equation.

Thanks
Sally

(P.S. Sorry, I posted this in the wrong thread previously)

Sally,

You're never going to be infected through a man (or woman) going down on you. You're not going to be infected through kissing.

If you'd kissed him immediately after his oral surgery and he had copious amounts of blood in his mouth, then you might have a theoretical risk. But a week after? No way.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST OVER THIS KISSING/ORAL SEX ISSUE, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

Hi Ann

Thanks for the reassurance.

There were not copious amounts of blood, but surely if there were lots of blood when kissing, that would pose a risk - or is the mouth somehow not an environment where the virus can be transmitted?

If there were that much blood, he wouldn't be kissing you or you him. He would be spending his time spitting blood.

Hi

What are the risks of HIV transmission for a WOMAN giving oral sex to a man?

What if precum gets into her mouth? What if the man ejaculates in her mouth?

Should she spit it out? What if she swallows?

It is apparent that you have not read the lessons on transmission. You can find the link in the "Welcome" thread.

I have read them but they are not clear to me.

Would you mind helping me out? I'm just trying to assuage my concerns and your tone is a bit abrasive. I've noticed that other people are asking similar questions and they are being helped out, without being told to read guidelines elsewhere. Ive read multiple questions here as to whether men can get hiv through receiving oral sex and the moderators have been very patient with them. Now I ask about the woman side of things and I get this.

I'm not sure why my post has got this response from you.

I apologize for not reading the welcome thread earlier.

Have you read anywhere that you can contract HIV from oral sex on this forum?

No, but it's always questions about whether the MAN can get HIV from receiving oral, not whether the woman can get it. I am totally clear that the man cannot.

That's why I asked the question about the woman side of things. And the question about spitting vs swallowing, as I dont see anything about this in the guidelines etc

If you read about oral sex with a guy it is no different with a female.

Sally,

Chill out. Oral sex isn't an hiv transmission vector.
