interview on thurs!
« on: August 01, 2006, 10:57:48 am »
Hi all

I have my interview at the HIV care centre on Thursday, very excited but havent had an interview in a while so not quite sure what to expect!

I dont know what stuff Id be good at. I know they have buddying, a big garden where people can help out in, working in the reception or cafe, the creche, or the outreach programme going to peoples houses and providing help there. I really dont know. Im sort of thinknig reception at first until I find my feet, then maybe try out the buddying

If I get in which I hope I will, I have to do 6 weekend training and get disclosure checks too( but due to the nature of my profession I have had them done before)

Im excited and apprehensive. I have never volunteered before, and I am scared I wont be any good  :-[

You'll do fine....Don't stress out about it.  If you're heart is in the right place (and I think yours is...wanting to volunteer) then irregardless of what position you find yourself, you'll be a great addition to their organization.

I am curious about something ...Disclosure Checks?  What are those?

A Big Thumbs Up and don't worry...You'll be great! :-*

Lassie,

Just be yourself and you'll be fine. Starting in reception sounds good - you'll get a good sense of the people and the place that way. Think about what things you enjoy doing and which of those things might be appropriate to share with others. For example, if you like gardening, maybe you could help out there.

Good luck and keep us posted.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

thanks guys

Disclosure is usually when you are working with the public- teachers, police etc etc. You have to have police checks done so you dont have a criminal record etc. It can be a long process, lots of forms to fill in and phone calls. But I have nothing to hide!

Ann I think reception will be good. I dont want to go in at the deep end and start to try too much when I wont know anyone. Best to get to know people slowly. If I was to do buddying, it would be nice if I knew someone there who I met at receptoin, that way Im not having to force a rship it will be one which is hopefully there anyway.

I think my heart is in the right place David. I love working with people, I did do some stuff in a hospital with children a few years back but that was part of my uni course we had to do it. It made me realise I lved working with people, and I loved helping where I could. I am actually very excited about what I will learn about myself and other people, who Ill meet, what adventures Ill get up to. Im most ready for a challenge in my life  :)

well I had my interview

It was more an informal chat and meeting. I went through a bit about me( but not anytihng about the inconclusive test or anything) I spoke about what Id like to do( maybe go to schools to give info, work at reception, do fundraising etc) He seemed keen, and we chatted for over an hour. I felt so at hme there, really happy. its a big place with a cafe and couches and people wandering around, very nice, bright etc

I could also work at a respite centre if I wanted to- I need to do 4 weeks of training, evenings and weekends. Im so up for it. He said all the vonunteers have a great rapport and do ltos of stuff, they also organise big events at the beach etc( although knowing the weather here, that will be like a day a year  :-\)

Anyway I am on a high. I loved it there, the people were great I want to get started and stuck in- roll on the autumn when I can get my training done and start!

x
