Some good news
« on: September 21, 2010, 10:19:56 pm »
I saw the doctor today, appointment and everything!

Despite my best efforts, not much has changed regarding my lipids.

Overall cholesterol was at 204, just a smidge less than last time. It is supposed to be less than 199.

HDL dropped a bit to 29. It is supposed to be more than 32.

LDL is almost exactly the same at 153. It is supposed to be less than 130.

My triglycerides are doing well, though. They came in at 111. They are supposed to be less than 200, so I am happy about that. This low number is the result of my taking 6,000 mgs (6 grams) of fish oil a day, or so the doctor said.

So, the doctor decided to up my Niaspan to 750 mgs to see if we can get the LDL down a bit.

I need to increase the exercise to raise the HDL. I have been lax about this, so it will be back to the gym at least three days a week for 2 hours.

The good news is my CPKs have dropped a bit. They were at 780 or so, now they are down to 482. This, the doctor said, is probably from my having dropped the red yeast rice from my compliment of supplements.

As it turns out, red yeast rice is a natural statin, and statins, in any form, and I don't get along.

Of course, it would be better if my CPKs were within the normal range, 232 or less, but I'll take what I can get.

So, at least I know I am not going to crater any time soon.

Oh, and I also have lost just under 15 pounds since I started watching my diet. So, things are progressing. ;D

HUGS,

Mark

I am so happy to hear this! Anything we can do to minimize the pills we have to take :)

You are truly a success story!

That's a great news ... I'm also hoping for some improvement on the lipid front when I have my labs done next month since changing from atripla to isentress .

Reading your post has been my inspiration to make changes that can help with my out of control lipids so thanks for posting .

That's good news, Mark.  Will your CPK's ever be normal?  Or will they just stay elevated, no matter what?  I'm pretty unfamiliar with all that.

Good news about the triglycerides, though.  Nice to drop a pill!

Very good, young man!  a trend in the RIGHT direction....  hope you can get everything under control with the cholesterol numbers.

I admire people like you who know they HAVE to stick to certain dietary restrictions and exercise programs....to be honest, I am not sure if I could do it if I had to !  I am so blessed to have 'perfect' numbers with lipids / triglycerides, etc, with basically no effort on my part.   Makes me feel guilty....

I have certainly seen the "other side", with terrible numbers, and being sick all the time.   It makes me truly grateful for the relative healthiness I am enjoying now.

Many hugs,
Alan

Good news Mark. Am I was remembering correctly that you switched from Isentress because of high CPK numbers?

Thanks all, you provide a great deal support for me.

Hey Billy,

No, I am still taking Isentress. My doctor and I had talked about it, but my options are somewhat limited.

I am not resistant to any meds, atl least as far as I know. I have never had a resistance test done.

But I switched to Isentress to try to curb my out of control lipids. I cannot take statins. The last time I did almost did me in.

So, it has to be a combo of diet, exercise, fish oil and Niaspan, which is high dosage niacin.

The Isentress may be the cause of the elevated CPKs, or not. At the moment, the pain and side effects of the elevated CPKs are mostly manageable without additional drugs or such.

Besides, compared to the Crixivan-induced kidney problems, this isn't bad at all.

So, I will just try to keep on doing what I am doing.

HUGS,

Mark

Hopefully you'll get some better results next time and be, below 200.  But overall not bad at all !

I need to increase the exercise to raise the HDL. I have been lax about this, so it will be back to the gym at least three days a week for 2 hours.

And I think, ( I know )  this is my biggest problem.  But I am getting better at it and a little more disciplined !

Good luck next time around !

You must be very pleased, over all not bad! You have inspired me to take fish oil, so I can't wait for the results next DR visit.

Congrats on losing 15 lbs! I'm stuck right now. I lost 25 lbs, but can't seem to lose anymore. Then I read your post, and realized I have not been in the GYM. Oops. ??? :-\ :-\ :-\

Mark, you are an amazing man. You have helped me so much over the past few years. I'm happy for you !

Oh my, the hot flashes. :o

I had them when I first started Niaspan a year or two ago.

You know what is really bizarre, I started to enjoy them.

Of course, soon as I did, they stopped. Now I rarely get them.

I may when I up the dose, though.

HUGS,

Oh, I hate hot flashes.  Especially when I get one while I'm at the mirror putting on my make-up.  Hard to put on foundation over sweat.
