Bactrim and Complera
« on: March 27, 2012, 11:32:17 pm »
Hello all. I was just wanting to know if anyone here has experience taking these two together. My doctor prescribed me both and said they are safe to take together. She did say however that she wanted me to take the bactrim first for about a week and then start taking complera. Reason being that both medications can cause a rash and if I start taking both at the same time she won't know which one I developed the rash from. Should I be nervous taking batrim with my low CD4 (134 as of 3/27/12)? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you everyone. Best wishes. -Mo

A low cd4 count is exactly why a patient is prescribed this medication (Bactrim). It prevents you from from developing pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) which people can easily die from. Hence why your doctor has you starting that drug a week before the other one.

There's no need to be nervous about it, it's completely a standard preventive medication that has been used in patients with HIV for decades.

Thanks for the reply Ms. P. I was just nervous that the bactrim may cause side effects as well, like candida or something. I'm all for taking it for preventive reasons but I just don't want to develop anything unwanted. : / Perhaps I will ask my doctor about taking probiotics while taking bactrim also? Anyone have advice as far as that is concerned?

You can get oral candida at any CD4 level whether taking bactrim or not. It's not just restricted to immuno-compromised people. If you develop candida your doctor will prescribe a drug called fluconazole or possibly nystatin.

I'm not aware of probiotics having any real effect on candida.

Muchas gracias MtD. I'm sure it's just nerves talking. Like I said before, I am all for taking all the meds I need to, to stay healthy. I'm praying for the best. Thanks again for your reply.

No problem Mo. It's much better you ask now than worry in silence. ;)
