Title: HIV Youtube Vlogger Is A Trip
Post by: tednlou2 on June 15, 2010, 02:32:19 am
I didn't know whether to put this in Living or here.  It didn't seem to rise to the level of "Living".  It is good that this guy is talking about HIV, but he is a trip.  He gets up and leaves for a minute with the camera still going.  It reminded me of a Whitney Houston concert where she just leaves the stage for several mins.  There is some girl sitting on the couch in the background.  He is giving out his name and social security number.

Couldn't watch much, (shrill and unpleasant), cause the message isn't for me as well...
But, nice to see some anger. "I'M NOT AFRAID IM GONNA DIE OR BE SICK." and "PEOPLE DONT WANNA TALK ABOUT THIS BUT IM GONNA TALK ABOUT THIS"

Who knows the annoying shit he maybe had to put up with in his crowd?

I know, I wondered just what they did or said to him.  However, I couldn't bare to watch his other videos to find out.

I did notice in the comment section yet another comment about HIV is all a hoax.  There must be people who troll HIV forums and Youtube posts to make that comment.  I see the denialist comments on just about every Youtube video post concerning HIV.  Another guy said he "hated all fags" but liked the ones who had the balls to admit they have HIV.  The comment sections are just awful.

It's just tripe, which can also be found in many cultures notably throughout Spain and all her past American colonies.

I first had it in France's culinary capital, Lyon, which has many dishes made from tripe.  I'll add that what I had there was world's better than what I've had in the South or Caribbean.  IIRC it was tablier de sapeur which is lightly breaded and pan fried.  Then there's stuff like andouillette sausage.  But I would assume it's the French influence from New Orleans that introduced this into Southern US cooking, though in Virginia when I grew up we never ate it.

Chitlins have their own place as long as they are made properly (cleaned well), it's the intestines so it's easy to see why it would be important.  Tripe is the stomach.   Anyone ever had crackling bread?  My mother use to make it.  I don't know what it was exactly but the stuff was so good.

Oh, my bad.  Maybe that's why I liked what I had in France better.  I've had intestines though definitely with mondongo in the Caribbean.

And a BIG YES to cracklin' bread -- I was raised on that and had it often at my grandmother's house on my maternal side.  It's incredible, and I was just saying to my mother that next time I'm home I was going to make it - it's really just corn bread with craklins thrown in, and that's just pork rind.  It's not always easy to find in suburban supermarkets if at all, but I can find it in the city at an old school butcher shop, and in fact there's one just for pig meat near me.  Oddly I can also go buy live chickens within walking distance of my apartment.

If cooked properly though it's quite good!!  The strangest thing I've eaten is raw conch penis (?) (reproductive organ) when I was staying in the Bahamas with my ex.

Hey David, does your mother make it with a cornbread type dough?  My mother had a unique way of making her cornbread and that's the part I can't match.

It was my grandmother that made it, not my mother.  My grandmother died five years ago, but I should have learned to make it 15 years ago when she was still cooking a bit, along with her pickled peaches, spoonbread and stuffing.  Nothing she did could be adequately replicated because she was so fierce she measured everything in the palm of her hands.

Have you had spoonbread?

Grits + spoonbread would seem to me to be a grainy, salt/butter overkill.  Plus I bet he dredged the catfish in cornmeal too.

Chitlins actually was introduced to southern culture because that's what slave owners would give the slaves.  I'm not sure if cracklin' bread is the same as what we call cracklins but that would be pork rinds, so basically pork skins + bread maybe?  I've actually never even heard of cracklin' bread.  I do love monkeybread though although that's complete off the new off topic discussion of this thread.

This statement is simplistic.

Well the slave owners would take the "choice" cuts of meat and leave the leftovers for the slaves.  Chitlins being one of those undesirable internal organs.  The slaves made due and found a way to make them palatable.  As time has worn on it's a dish some people seem to enjoy.  I personally can't get past the smell.

Your mother might run a burger shack but you know little about food preparation, much less the complex interweaving of cultural influences in 17th and 18th century America.  I surely wouldn't rule out Massa eating porcine viscera if that's what his père had done in Nantes.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-chitlins.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chitterlings

http://www.reference.com/browse/chitterlings

"African Americans with roots in the rural South also claimed a specific cultural meaning for chitlins. At an early date, forced reliance  upon offal marked the foods of black southerners with a meaning different from those of whites. Until emancipation, African American food choice was restricted by the dictates of white society. Despite these restrictions, perhaps even as a retort  of sorts, African Americans fashioned a cuisine of their own. Laws may have been enacted to regulate slave dress and codify  slave mores, but in the kitchen freedom of expression was tolerated, even encouraged. As a result, African American cooks reinterpreted traditional foodways in an African-influenced manner and claimed chitterlings as distinctly African American.

Chitterling imagery pervades African American culture. The informal circuit of juke joints and clubs patronized by African Americans has long been called the "Chitlin Circuit." The bluesman Mel Brown, a veteran of the circuit, chose to title his early 1970s greatest hits album Eighteen Pounds of Unclean Chitlins and Other Greasy Blues Specialties.

When soul food came to the fore in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s, chitlins—along with watermelons and okra—were celebrated as a cultural sacrament. But not all African Americans embraced chitterlings as a preferred marker of identity. "You hear a lot of jazz about soul food," observed Eldridge Cleaver in 1968. 'Take chitterlings: the ghetto blacks eat them from necessity while the black bourgeoisie has turned it into a mocking slogan . . . . Now that they have the price of a steak, here they come prattling about Soul Food.'"

Your disingenuous copypasta says nothing about the tradition of offal in Spanish and French cooking which would have preceded any written slave history, and it was those people who settled the Gulf coast before any English cracker stepped in.

Just can't ever admit you're wrong, can you?  I could give you countless other examples of the history of chitlin's being specific to african american culture, their origination going back to pre-emancipation days, and how chitlins is a very specific dish (even if predated by other similar foods), but that would do nothing to alleviate that chip on your shoulder.

Weren't we discussing the French fondness for innards just a year ago?

Just remember that Andouillette is much coarser than cajun Andouille.

I sometimes order the former at the Café de Paris in Monte Carlo because it grosses everyone out, including myself, and is a fitting ironic dish in this beautiful vulgar place.

Supposedly only the French really enjoy this dish.  I need tons of mustard and bottles of wine to get through a plate.

My intellectual capacity or in this case your notion that I lack intelligence has nothing to do with the fact that I just referenced my point in 3 different online sources with differing contributors and then quoted a reference stating that your argument was completely off base.  Smart or not, I just reinforced my point and annihilated yours.  I have no idea why you feel the need to antagonize me as a result of it and I really don't care.

Do you realize that "chitterlings" is just a word for an internal organ?  It's not a recipe.  There's no way to trace the preparation of this to Africa because where would you look?  Slaves were imported from Gambia to Namibia and would have encompassed thousands of different tribal cultures, whereas it's well known that the Spanish imported the first pigs to America with Hernando de Soto.

Your problem is seeing the consumption of pig intestines as something special to that backwater shithole region you live in.  Do you even own a passport?

Does it matter when you're a hung Puerto Rican bottom that sings Menudo tunes for an extra $100 while being fisted?  She's gotta pay for her roids and botox somehow before that next Black Party!

I was eating some "Potted Meat" as I was reading about the chittlins.  Anyone had that?  Very gross looking, but actually good on a cracker.  It has all that tripe.  They spin the unwanted meat and what sticks goes in the can I think.

Edited to say another company calls it "Deviled Ham" I believe, but I don't think it is as good.

eww, that stuff is nasty just like canned vienna sausage and spam.  We only ate that when camping in 3rd grade, an activity much like fishing that I've only done once in my life.  You're more of a country bumpkin than I thought, tedderz.

Update: It is Underwoods. I just pulled a can from my pantry. Interesting side note, on the label it says "Awarded Chef's BEst award- Chefs best award is given to brands highly rated overall by independent Professional Chefs".

See, I'm eating quality stuff.

PS- It also says "Tastes great in tacos!"

I have some vienna sausages and SPAM in my pantry.  I think I like SPAM better cold with some mayo on bread instead of fried.  I don't eat this stuff all the time.  It has soo much salt in it.  I probably eat it every 6 mths.

C'mon boo, that stuff is nasty.  They make that from pork assholes and other delights.

Nothing like a good can of Spanish tuna (especially the Bonito del Norte kind). Once you have this everything else becomes cat food.

SPAM and vienna sausages aren't nearly as bad as the Potted Meat.  That really does look like cat food and is all the unwanted stuff.

Marie Callender recall after salmonella outbreak

WASHINGTON (AP) - ConAgra Foods is recalling all Marie Callender's brand cheesy chicken and rice frozen meals after they have been possibly linked to a salmonella outbreak in 14 states.

The company said it was recalling the meals after it was informed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of a possible link between the meals and 29 illnesses. Eight of those sickened reported eating the product in April or May 2010.

The Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service, which announced the recall late Thursday, said the most recent illness was reported May 22....

Uh Oh SpaghettiOs
thanks for that tip. ;)
I just checked and luckily all the cans in my cupboard are okay.

I've already eaten a few other cans of spaghetti-Os later and having been using those emptied, cleaned cans to cover up the tiki torches by the pool. I'm not going to go look at those codes. Since none of those cans killed me, it doesn't matter if they came from the undercooked lot or not.

Although that could be a great story about how my hardworking <300 tcells fought off the evil killer Spaghetti-O Meatballs. ::) :D

Do you scribble the date of purchase on canned goods like Gran Gran used to?

LOL Nope

the "bad" code was "EST K" and mine were "EST R",
so I didn't even have to worry about the dates.

but I am trying something my Granny did used to do. ;) I'm making a batch of "bread-n-butter" pickles out of all the cucumbers I just picked out of my garden this week. Damned Home Depot mislabeled some plants and the cantaloupes turned out to be cucumbers, so I'm got more cucumbers coming in than I can shake a stick at.  :D

Nothing wrong with meat in a can. If I want a few bites of octopus or squid I'm not going to defrost and cook the whole damn animal, I'm going to quickly open a little tin from Spain. Galletas con pulpo is one of my favorite snacks, sometimes I make it for parties too but crackers laying down take up a lot of space.

Well I got that dramatic "Food Inc." on my mind cause I just watched it again the other day.  :-[

Do you know how much a open air raised farm chicken costs in Switzerland?  20-25 bucks. And it aint big, feeds about 4.

Since I arrived here over a decade ago, the food is going downhill, because the prices are going downhill as the 2 big conglomerate supermarkets become increasingly internationally sourced and industrialized.  Used to be, the supermarket cakes were made with butter and cream. Now you got read the labels and pay through the nose for real ingredients.
