A few questions
« on: April 21, 2010, 08:46:31 pm »
I have a few questions to ask.

1. I have read that Hep C can slow down the body from making anti-bodys and that could give a false negative result. If you were to have Hep C and manage to contract HIV would you show a positive result on a HIV test if you started to have ARS?

2. How reliable is Home Access HIV test? I know that they are the only ones that the FDA has approved. The only reason I ask about this is because I read that they are 100% at testing for a positive and 95.5% for a negative and that is odd to me.

The Home Access is an approved test. We're not interested in getting into percentages here. As long as you take the test at the appropriate time you will get a reliable result. The CDC recommends 13 weeks after a risky incident. You can test initially at 6 weeks. A negative result at that point is likely to continue to remain negative at 13.

Having Hep C is not going to affect the reliability of your test result as long as it is taken at the right time.

You're mixing up a number of things in your question. Just keep it simple. Test at the appropriate time and you will get a reliable result.

You haven't mentioned what the nature of your risk was that even makes you think you had a risk. That's up to you if you want to share that information for consideration.

I had unprotected vaginal sex with a woman. I also gave her oral but from reading here is a no risk. Is oral even a no risk if she is squirted vaginal fluid in my face? It went in my mouth, up my noise, and maybe in my eyes as it was all over the place.

Thanks for the clarification. Since you had unprotected intercourse you do need to test. You also should know that HIV is harder to transmit from female to male than the other way round. Since it was apparently a single incident, the odds of testing negative are in your favor.

The other aspects of your incident were not risks for transmission.

You need to learn from this experience. You can have all the sex you want including with someone who is HIV+. But you need to always do it the safer way. That means always without exception using a condom everytime for vaginal and anal intercourse. Condoms provide very effective protection.

Good luck with your test.

I did take a test at 6 months and it came back negative. It was a Home Access HIV test that is why I asked about them in my original post. The whole % thing is doing my head in.

OK. So you are reliably HIV negative. In the future make sure to use condoms everytime you have vaginal or anal intercourse and you will be well and effectively protected. No exceptions.

Good luck and get on with your life.

Cheers.
