Just got the news. . . .
« on: April 11, 2007, 07:32:03 pm »

Kinda strange to hear the results from ma, but she came over bringing the poor news. Odd thing is, I tested neg. about 13 months ago, and the only boy i have been with in that time tested neg. now. So its kind of confusing. Like a false pos. or something. But the lab tech said probly not.

Anyway, im over the shock. My man isnt leaving me (thank god). And i have to find a dr. and a clinic to start going to and stuff. Just started reading, its sorta scary but i see so many people winning the battle its not too bad i guess. . .

I hope my relationship with this forum will be a happy one. . . . .
thanks in advance for the help . . . . .

Hi Audio, welcome to the forums.

You say the only person you've been with since your last negative test is hiv negative, but unless you've seen his lab results with your own eyes, you dont know that for sure. He may be either lying or ASSUMING he is hiv negative.

And yes, until you've had the confirmation of a positive Western Blot to support your positive ELISA, then you could be dealing with a false positive. Make sure BOTH an ELISA and a Western Blot are run. For more information on the hiv diagnostic tests, please read the HIV Testing Lesson

If your "man" isn't the same person as the "boy" you mention, he also needs to test. It's unclear whether they are the same person or not, but the way I read it, the "boy" isn't the person you are with now. Please clarify?

I urge you to get confirmation of your positive diagnosis before you go further with this.

Hang in there and let us know how it goes.

Ann

audio,

Are you pregnant? Pregnancy can sometimes cause a false positive so again, I urge you to make sure you have the Western Blot run to either confirm your positive or rule it out.

If you are pregnant AND positive, you will be able to take meds starting (I think) in the third trimester. Taking the meds during pregnancy means the chance of your baby being born hiv negative are very, very good.

Please get that confirmation and in the meantime - hang in there!

Sorry Audio,

When you said "I hope my baby doesn't get it" I couldn't help but think pregnancy!

Abnormal proteins? There are several conditions that can cause false positives, so again, at the risk of sounding like I only know one line, please make sure you get the proper confirmatory tests done. The place where you had your initial test done should take care of it for you.

Is it possible that you were still in the window period the last time you tested? Only a negative test three months after your last unprotected intercourse is conclusive.

Keep us posted...

I know how you must feel right now. You must be brave but just know that you are not alone in this journey. Please seek medical help asap and get all the support that you may need. Joining this website is the first step. I tested positive a few months ago and have been dealing with many emotions at once but just know things slowly but surely will get better.
