How can i tell ?????
« on: August 27, 2011, 10:58:32 pm »
I am having a very hard time with this issue. My husband tested poz 2 weeks ago i tested neg. This week we met with the ID dr and his VL 400,000 and TC was 30 . I am wondering how long he has had this and his dr said there is no way to tell and she can not guess. I read other posts on here and people seem to know based on what the dr says how many years they have had the virus. Are the dr keeping info from me?
Thanks

Unless one has been testing regularly, there is no real way of figuring out when one was infected. Different people progress at different rates. However, going by his numbers, it's probably safe to say it's been a few years. How many years exactly is anyone's guess.

It's probably a good idea to take the stance that Zach has - look forward, not back.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Em is a self-described "Fruity Old Thang". Look at the words under her avatar. She's one of the nicest fruity old thangs I've ever had the pleasure to know.

Zach, you're only as old as the woman you feel. As far as I'm concerned, I'm still sixteen - it's a freaking shock everytime I look in the mirror. ;D

I am wondering how long he has had this and his dr said there is no way to tell and she can not guess.

What Ann explained.

Also, when you read these forums, some of us know quite well - but there are many ways the date of infection can be known.

You husband would have to know and be honest about  his history of risky encounters.
Or
He would have had negative tests that therefore place the infection after the negative tests.
Or
I think sometimes after a diagnosis, when the person has been seen and studied for quite awhile by an ID, there are things in a persons health and/or blood that lead to indications about how long the infection was actively infected. But not always.
Also it may or many not be important to know.

There are ways to pursue this dating of infection if its really important to you -- but you should carefully think about why it's important to you, and also if your husband thinks its important, or not.

The doctor is correct she/he can't tell, don't listen to what regular people say. I am saying this from personal experience. My both doctors (Family and specialist) told me no way to tell. As others said , look forward.
