antidepressants and ARV

Does anyone have any experience with antidepressants. I am suffering terribly with depression, anxiety and moodswings. I have never bought into AD's, i cant see how they can change things in the long run... just cause dependancy. But My adherence is being effected by my depression due to self destructive behaviour with alcohol binging and just generally not caring about f.a. I do not want to go on being this miserable as it is now effecting my relationships with friends and family. I need to change summin and my nurse suggested seeing a GP and gettin Antidepressants, among other things. I am not sure whether they are a good idea. I hoped maybe someone could share their experiences with antidepressants and how they react with ARV treatment. Any comments woud be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Antidepressants do not lead to dependency and are an excellent idea if you and your doctor thinks you need them .

People react to different antidepressants in a unique way so its important to work with your doctor to find the one that's right for you . You may end up trying a few or adjusting the dose before you find the right one . I'm speaking from experience , I all most gave up on treating my depression and my doctor tried one last drug ,and  it worked .

If you are working with your doctor and going in with the attitude that it may take a little work and a little time you really have nothing to lose .

I second Jeff's comments...it is not a bad idea...but I would go to a psychiatrist not a GP since they are more well versed in the different types of treatment

I also agree that there is no one size fits all approach...when I was first diagnosed I was immediately put on lexapro and klonopin for anxiety and depression...the lexapro wasn't right for me so I got switched to Prozac and it seems to work for me.   But everyone is different...and it often takes a few tries to get it right...just work with your doctor and be patient, in general they take 3 to 4 weeks to start having an effect.

Alo I would suggest talk therapy (cbt)...it has helped me and the combination of medicine and therapy has shown great result...I wish you the best
