Oooh, those sound like good movies! I have Baby Jane. I didn't know the neighbor was her daughter.
I also have 'My Bloody Valentine 3D' and '30 Days of Night' - those were surprisingly good.
I have a documentary about a gay porn movie called 'Exposed: The Making of a Legend' it's actually very interesting. It shows the behind the scenes where the "actors" actually get along and shows the comradery that went on. It's very good. Plus it stars Dean Phoenix who is such a doll!

I saw the sequel to Transformers yesterday. I never thought I would say this about a special effects movie but I actually thought it was too much and there were so many close up scenes during fighting sequences - I hate those close up scenes - it was hard to make out what was going on.
It was alright. It wasn't a bad movie but wasn't as much 'fun' I thought it was going to be.

I didn't like it either I just lost concentration not even half way through. There was way too much happening at once on the screen it was confusing. And it had loads of continuity errors which is the kind of thing that really annoys me.You'd think the amount of money it costs making a movie like that they'd at least check stuff before releasing it?
I saw Public Enemies last week I thought that was a good film.It must have been because I didn't get bored in it even though it was quite long(2hours and 20minutes)

I want to go see the new Francis Ford Coppola Tetro which opens here on Friday.  It's his first original screenplay in 35 years.

I had a movie weekend and saw 'Knowing' with Nicolas Cage, it started off interesting but ended up silly (hint: the last Indiana Jones movie). 'The Unborn' - the previews were creepier than the movie.  Not good. 'Push' - which to me was like a dull movie version of 'Heroes' and 'The House of Yes' - with Parker Posey.  That one was interestingly odd. Incest, obsession, insanity and throw in some sense of humor well, it was, different. Loved Parker Posey in it though.

I watched "Doubt" last night and was, suprisingly, impressed.  I fell asleep half way through (missed my afternoon nap), but finished it this morning.  Lots of good talking points and places for real inner examination.

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.
Love it. Have watched it several times and still find it adrenaline rushed. Has brutality, blood, sensuality, nobility and set in time period of beginning-of-the-end of Mayan culture. Subtitled because an effort was made for actors to speak the ancient tongue.

I've never been a big fan of musicals - excluding GREASE, the best musical ever - BUT I forgot about these two fluffy, cheesy, FUN movies!
First two are from the same movie:

I saw a very good movie on cable Monday night called "The Kite Runner" about two boys in Afghanistan during the period just prior to the Soviet invasion and through the initial takeover by the Taliban.  It centered around the two boys, one of whose father was comfortable and the other the son of his servant and their very touching friendship revolving around the dangers of their country and flying very colorful kites druing playtime which the inhuman Taliban later banned.  The wealthier man takes his son to live in America and they settle in San Francisco and the son grows up and marries but must return to Kabul in a very dangerous time to find the young son of his old friend.

It had subtitles, with some English spoken and was well done and I highly recommend it.

Before I moved to Hawaii or L.A. and my friends Mark and Pam moved to China, we rented B movies on rainy days.  Our best finds were:
1.  Attack of the Killer Tomatos, starring George Clooney (his first film)
2. Toxic Zombie, this one wore a pink Tutu.
3. The Big Chill, Kevin Costners first film, he was completely cut out of.
4.  Officer and a Gentleman, because it was close to the time of the gerbil story

We drank Merlot then but I drink Pinot Noir now.   ;D  Have the best day

Texan, if you liked "Lust, Caution" (which I personally loved) I would recommend "In the Mood For Love," in my opinion one of the most beautiful and captivating films ever made (made in Hong Kong, it can feel a bit slow, but every scene feels like a work of art).  There was a second film by the same director called "2046," which was good as well (though not as great as the first one).

If you like spooky Asian films like "Audition" I'd recommend "A Tale of Two Sisters" (great story, has a few scary moments), "Ichi the Killer" (absolutely disturbing, I would not watch again, even though I thought it was good), "Suicide Circle" (loved it), "The Heirloom" (spooky and with a very cool story to back it up), and the not so scary but somewhat beautiful "Face."

If you like Heneke's "Funny Games" (I saw the original version sans Naomi Watts), you might like his film "Cache" (a masterpiece in my humble opinion).  German/Austrian films have a few hidden gems like "Run Lola, Run," "The Edukators," and "The Princess and the Warrior."  A good "scary" film from Germany is "Antikorper" (Netflix has it as "Antibodies").

Hope that you haven't seen any of these and give them a try (or, if you've seen them, that you liked them as well)...

Cheers...

M.

After a year of prodding by my best friend I finally got around to seeing Donnie Darko tonight. I had no idea what to expect but it was excellent. It had a twisting but coherent story, good acting, eerie mood and great music. I understand why it has a cult following.

AAAAHHHH! A couple of weeks ago, I had 'Itchi the Killer' in my hands but I put it back!  I went to Best Buy during my lunch hour today and now, it's gone! I did get two movies that seem interesting though, honestly, I've never heard of them: one is 'CHOKE' with Sam Rockwell and Angelica Huston and the other is 'Donkey Punch'...mmmm, don't know the people in that one but it has a quote "It's DEAD CALM meets VERY BAD THINGS."

Well, I'm very old school and I go out to buy movies at stores (Best Buy, FYE, Target, Walmart, etc)but now finding movies I want are slim pickins.  Seems I'm going to have to start ordering movies online because I just can't find them in stores anymore! I am now being forced to get with the computer age.  ;)

I'm a bit of a crime buff...if you are too I recommend:

Kill Me if You Can.  Factual story of the "red light bandit," Caryl "Chess" Chessman, who was sentenced to death in Los Angeles in 1948 and finally executed at San Quentin in 1960.

Legend of Lizzie Borden.  Elizabeth Montgomery stars in one of the most infamous murder cases of the 19th century (1892.)  She was charged with killing her father and stepmother with an ax and was found not guilty, in Fall River MA.  The case remains unsolved to this day.

Helter Skelter.  Story of the (Charles) Manson 'family' murders, trial, and convictions in 1969 in Los Angeles.

This is what I remember about the Lizzie Bordern thing:  Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her father 40 whacks.  When she saw what she had done, she gave her mother 41.

I had a Zenith TV (the last American made brand) for about 12 years) with a VCR and a satelight receiver and last night, I was watching an old movie and the machine went pop, the screen went black and smoke started coming out.

I bought it at Circuit City and they are no more... The phone numbers in the user manuals are no longer connected and directory assistance has no new listings.

All of a sudden I noticed LG Electronics listed in Mexico and Canada and called them.  Zenith was bought out by LG and they have a local repair shop which does free diagnostics.  And I was thinking, shit, you buy something in good faith and it only lasts 12 years?   ;D  Have the best day

now michael.

I had a similar experience last night.  I was watching so you want to be a dancer and all of a sudden the picture 'pixelated'. I don't know if it's the tv (a 12 year old Sony) or the  digital converter box that went balooey.  I just know my picture is gone.

Now I've got a 30 year old RCA down in the barn.  I think I'll bring that up and see if it works.

Takashi Miike, the guy who made Audition, has a bunch of other movies.  A few of my favorites are Ichi the Killer, Visitor Q, and Happiness of the Katakuris (this one's a a dark comedic musical).

Cold Turkey with dick van dyke is on today @ 1:45 cst on Flix.
Made right here in my home state. A lot of unknown stars
that soon became household names on ALL IN THE FAMILY.
I was in the back shot, at the end, when they chant "put it to
a vote". Soooo long ago...

I liked haunting in connecticut.
Knowing was good for awhile, till it turned spacy-twilight-zone-ish.
Sometimes i wonder WHY a good film takes a wrong turn.

Like "Jeepers Creepers" was a good horror film, mystery, eerie, till they introduced the stupid
bat monster...WHY??
If they'd left it alone, no physical monster, just eerie happenings being chased by a demon
truck, with bodies stacked down drain pipes, then the film would have had a Hitchcock
quality. But so often a good horror film is wrecked by introducing a dumb cgi effect monster
at some point.

I'm doing a Fritz Lang and Nicholas Ray festival this summer.  They seem to be good movies for late summer nights.
In August I will watch A Summer Place, A Place in the Sun, some Douglas Sirk, the Parent Trap, and Trouble With Angels.  Followed by trash and gore and gangster stuff.
I am not a big fan of Monty Clift, but Elizabeth Taylor is just sublime in A Place in the Sun. Of course its based on An American Tragedy and when I watched it in my early teens I was only vaguely aware of my "class" so kinda identified with George Eastment and of course voluptuous Liz Taylor was mainlined through to my synapsis waiting for glamour beauty riches sex everything.

I'll drive down here to see you.
I'll pick you up outside the factory.
You'll be my pick-up! We'll arrange
it somehow, whatever way we can.

Of course that's me 10-20 years later, with my rough trade or low-rent lovers.
Its the fact that I protected into both characters that really makes this movie electric.

"Angela, if I could only tell you
how much I love you. If I could only tell you all."

"Tell Mama.
Tell Mama all."

Well those two lines just blew my circuits completely.

Now, "A Summer Place" is just good camp....

If unfortunately the hottest night of the summer arrives and I'm not gonna get laid, then I have Streetcar Named Desired, a bottle of bourbon, and some chinese paper lanterns, ready for a self-pitying over the hill queen fest.
We know who I'll be identifying with there.

R.I.P. Karl Malden by the way.

Definitely.  The movie, like many actual true stories, ruined it. If you check out on youtube... A Haunting show for the documentary. it's a bit more factual.

1.Road to Perdition- Tom Hanks plays an unlikely character and I was quite surprised at how well he played the role of a gangster/killer.
2.Legend of the Fall- Brad Pitt makes a comeback after that sorry movie with Morgan Freeman.
3.American History X- just screwed up from beginning to end, but that's what makes it good.

Valkyrie actually surprised me. It was with Tom Cruise.  You may be thinking of the Tarintino film w/ Brad Pitt "Inglourious Basterds" that is coming out next month.  Valkyrie I thought was exceptionally good.

I just watched it and I hear ya brother. It was 3 hours but felt even longer for some reason. I love comic books but I was never a big fan of Watchmen the graphic novel (I hear fanboys gasping at the sacrilege). Just not my taste. The movie did some things really well, the visuals mainly. Some of the actors were good too- it is hard to make comic book dialogue not sound ridiculous. Overall it just fell flat.

I finally saw 'Ichi The Killer', Holy Crap! That's a disturbing movie! It was the kind of movie I thought it would be.  I also saw 'Race to Witch Mountain'.....mmmm, eh, it's alright. Didn't like it as much as I thought I would.  The next movie I'm going to see this weekend is 'Obsessed' with Beyonce. I'm not expecting it to be a great movie but at least a decent 'Fatal Attraction'.

The movie I'm getting very curious about is 'District 9'.  I'm reading a lot of good things about that movie.  I just might actually go to the theater for that one.

Bear, if you liked "Valkerie", may I suggest you watch "Defiance".  It is a wonderful and historically accurate movie about events that I never knew took place.  If you rent it, be sure to watch the "extras" as it gives you background information and really good insight into the main charactors.

During our mini vacation, Hubby and I went to see "Transformers II".  Not much of a story line, but with graphics like that, who cares!  We were hoping to see "GI Joe", but it didn't start until we were in Boston.  We'll have to wait for it to come out on rental.

That one is going to be great.  The whole South African / Apartheid allegory makes it only more interesting.  Me, wifey, and the best friend are going on Saturday.

A coworker highly recommended'Defiance'....hmm, might buy that movie.  I'm curious about 'G.I. Joe' but only because of Channing Tatum.  ;)  But I know me, I'll wait until it comes out on DVD and appreciate Channing at home.  ::)

Another movie I'm hearing good reviews about is 'Inglorious Basterds'.  Being that it's a Quentin Tarentino movie, I'm not to sure if I want to see such violence on the big screen when it's released.

Glad I'm not the only one.  I watched it on a 13 hour flight.  Tried to watch it throughout the entire flight (slim pickings on the VOD) and was just bored to death (never seen such an unfocused action movie).

Last night Hubby rented "Push".  I didn't think I'd like it, but it was quite enjoyable.  The premise was a bit overdone, but all in all not bad with a clever ending.

Tonight, we'll watch "The Soloist" with Jamie Foxx.  It's advertised as a true story.  This is more in tuned (no pun intended) to my taste.  I'll let you know what I think.

I saw Public Enemies yesterday, and thought it was very well done.  Not Oscar material, but a good flick.

Saw 'Obsessed'....nnnnno, didn't like it. I thought the movie tried way to hard to be a thriller.  I also saw 'I Love You Man', it's actually ok.  Not as funny as I thought it was going to be but, overall, not bad.  Laughed several times.  Oh, I also saw the Woody Allen movie 'Annie Hall', had never seen it before, not bad. I liked it.  It was alright.

Ok, I'm going on several recommendations here.....so I went out and bought 'Valkyrie' and 'Defiance', I'll see those two next weekend.

I love that one, a favourite of mine when it comes to Woody Allen (Along with 'Mighty Aphrodite' and 'Match Point').  I bet you will like it better if you happen to see it again.

Ps./  'District 9' = Awesome, brilliant, ace.

Ps2./ I told you 'Obsessed' was whack :)

Annie Hall was alright?  Love Woody Allen. Just saw crimes and misdemeanors. Hannah and her sisters is great too. Nothing like woody kvetching over love and death.

Saw "The Solist" last night and it was a beautiful movie.  The guy at Blockbuster told me he didn't like it because it "has too much classical music in it."  HMM, let's see, one of the main charactors is a cello player discovered while playing the violin.  I can see where classical music would be a suprise (note the sarcasm).  There were some "Fantasia"' moments with swirling lights and flying pigeons.  But even those were forgiveable and quickly forgotten in light of the its beauty.  I highly recommend it.

Awww shit!!! They killed Dumbledorf!!!! That blows, he made all the movies to me. Ear splitting levels would sound normal to me probably.....And since I am hearing such bad reviews on the Transformer sequel, I think I'll wait to see it on cable.

A horror movie that was stupid as hell to me was One Missed Call. I am definitely glad I watched it on cable before buying it. Even Diary of the Dead by George Romero was a let down. Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 is due out the end of the month. It looks better than the first one but is not following the original by John Carpenter but then the first one really didn't either. The only thing they had in common was the name of the characters.

Takashi Miike, the guy who made Audition, has a bunch of other movies.  A few of my favorites are Ichi the Killer, Visitor Q, and Happiness of the Katakuris (this one's a a dark comedic musical).

Audition is great. My favorite of his is One Missed Call. I saw the Japanese version way before the horrible American version came out.

I'm looking forward to seeing Inglorious Basterds as well as Halloween 2. Rob Zombie is a horror genius.

I saw Push this weekend. My boyfriend rented it and didn't think I would like it, but I did a lot. It reminded me of the show "Heroes" a little.

Summer in the city and with some extra time on our hands.... Kurt and I went to see the film:  "Julie and Julia".
What a treat.  A great film.  Made me really happy.

Modified to add: my favorite line from Julia Child was when she picks pasta out of a pot of boiling water and said: " its as hot as a hard cock!."
