Not a clue  !!  :o

No clue either, Ray...

To me the 80's are all about:

1) The Smiths
    - How Soon Is Now? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U5HpeA_WSo) - The song that at the age of 9 made me realise that I was queer and different...
    - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naos7it_bl0) - Cleverly remade a couple of years ago by Mark Ronson, this is late 80s at its best.

2) Depeche Mode
    - Strangelove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIrm0dHbCDU): One of the most perfect singles ever released.
   - Personal Jesus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1xrNaTO1bI): Summer of '89, a nice way to head into the 90s.

That's the dude from Scarface and he was Antonio Montana's right hand man, well before Antonio shot him for dating his sister.  If you are slightly familiar with Miami's 80's television programming he also played on the hit sitcom Que Pasa USA...  the show responsible for my limited bilingual capabilities!

Oh, Esteban Ernesto Echevarria (AKA Steven Bauer)?  I knew about him and Melanie Griffith, but not Ms. Manchester.

Que Pasa USA was actually fun.  The real Hialeah!

It sure was.  Talk about some memories...

Music wise the 80's was a dark period for me.  I was into groups like Suicidal Tendencies and Black Sabbath

I love 80's music! That's an excellent mix!  Talk about a blast from the past, I remember Que Pasa USA - well, the only thing I really remember was Steven always wearing tight jeans but then again it was the 80's, everyone wore tight jeans and he wore them well!  ;)

Great vids!

Culture Club & Boy George rocked my world in the 80's.  I almost tossed out my two-tone jeans and Serucchi jacket for a Boy George frock in the 80s!

As the song goes, I'm still preoccupied with 1985. There was a lot of good music. This is one of my favorite songs and the video still is effective today.

Unfortunate this video was cringe-worthy back then and has only gotten more embarrassing with age.

Although released in 1990, she is still an icon of the 80s:

that's great to hear, especially after Oakley did his little collab with the PSB on the extra material from their "Yes" cd

ah, it was in the late 80s when Randy and I owned our little pop-n-pop pet shop (WE were the original "pet shop boys" ;D), and the Pet Shop Boys were our heroes.

Great one hit wonder.  The stuff she released under her own name in the 90s (especially the soundtrack to 'Magnolia') was really good.

And here's one of the best rock songs of the 80s (long before the whole "alternative" wave became mainstream):

Janes' Addiction - Mountain Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ5kGqOstMc) (1988)

So much to chose from in the 1980s.  Going in the direction of dance music, here are a few gems:

Pet Shop Boys - "Always On My Mind" - 1987 - [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDe60CbIagg[/link]

Nu Shooz - "I Can't Wait" - 1986 - [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Yx0X-eHn8[/link]

The Dazz Band - "Let It Whip" - 1982 - [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE7-tWEEejU[/link]

Blondie - "Rapture" - 1981 - [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHCdS7O248g[/link]

I could go on and on and on....

First I will tantalize the board with various personal transmogrifications during the 80's, from Ian McCulloch-inspiration through Morrissey and to Vogue.

Then I will throw out some more suitable obscurities to trump the other offerings here, in my typical elitist fashion:

Best Instrumental Ever Made, Any Genre:
Simple Minds - Theme For Great Cities

Fiercest Homo to Have Off'd Himself with Prescription Sedatives in a Room of Whippets
The Associates (f/Billy MacKenzie) - Skipping

So Gay He Wasn't Gay
Japan (f/David Sylvian) - Quiet Life

Just Plain Fiercely Gay
Pete Shelley - Witness The Change

That baseline use to have my neighbors pissed when I would drive down the street.  You didn't hear me coming, no you felt me coming.  My 1985 Cutlass Supreme was a rolling dance club with 8- 10" EV Force speakers in ithe back.... can still remember the police finding it laying flat on the ground in Liberty City.  You could look through the hood straight through to the trunk, they stripped that car bare, engine and all !

Ooh, major choon; when House went pop :).  When that song was #1 we used to annoy my mother by singing its most screechy parts from the back seat of the car, eventually she had to join in.  Martha Wash gave life to so many great dance ditties.

I remember when there was a rumour that Katrin (the one who lip-synched for Black Box) was a transgender male.  She really looks like there a re some male hormones going on there in the video for "Fantasy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_KMaEJLOp0)" (1990).

Since you mention Technotronic, and on the subject of lip-synching (I guess Ya Kid K was too tomboyish and having a hot model from Zaire ghosting the vocals made things better), here's the pop-house song that led us into the 90's (I'm sure veritas will start a thread for the best decade ever pretty soon):

Ultra-cheesy video, still one of the best dance tracks to go mainstream.

Listening to a lot of this  makes me realize how much good music came out during this era.  The other night they had Freddie Mercury and Billy Idol back to back on the show Biography.  While we all know Mercury was a God, I think Billy Idol's music was a bit underated :

Eyes Without a Face :

Then there was this, if you were into rap that is.  To tell the truth this may have never made airplay outside of Miami.  Ignore the name on the label and I think everyone would be surprised at how different this was from the garbage they put out later, of course this was before Luke came along:

I loved Black Box...  I can even forgive the get vocals from one singer and give it to the model to lip sync.

Another highly produced band at the time was the KLF.

Although not a huge Rap fan... I loved Snap

thanks to the net, I was able to find and replace a lot of old KLF that I lost in a house fire years ago,
so I gotta mention this one too - Justified and Ancient (with Tammy Wynette)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPjggN-KByI

the KLF had been working on a movie project in 89 which was canceled near the end. the soundtrack (the white room) was finally released a couple years later

After being here roughly 4 years I finally figured out what poppers were, I was wrong when I thought you guys were talking about something from Chile's restautant obviously.

LOL...

ps: back in the day when it was still acceptable to snort poppers on a dance floor, not to mention a rag soaked in ethyl chloride!

Those must have been the days.  Too bad I was nowhere near clubbing age to experience that sight.

I bet one song that required heavy consumption of poppers was the [arguably] first House track ever.  I know Philly will fight me on this one.

1) Jesse Saunders - On And On (1984)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUeMFG4wjJw

And then came this lovely Deep House melody (in my opinion this should have been huge)

2) Mr. Fingers - Can You Feel It (1985)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckujrmo3sPw

3) And one of my all-time favourites whether House or not (perhaps the first cross-over house anthem to hit #1)

M|A|R|R|S - Pump Up the Volume (1987 - UK #1)

I had never heard that song before. Interesting juxtaposition of genres.

The Clash - "Rock the Casbah" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ9r8LMU9bQ  Still one of my favorite songs for doing heavy weights, plus you have to love a video that has an armadillo running around in it.

Romeo Void - "Never Say Never" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePIImGMjn_8  Debora Iyall was criticized for not being slender and pretty but I thought her look and voice was spot on for this song. Beth Ditto of Gossip reminds me of a 21st century Iyall.

Joan Jett - "Bad Reputation"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RAQXg0IdfI  Classic.

ZZ Top - "Gimme All Your Lovin'" http://video.aol.com/video-detail/zz-top-gimme-all-your-lovin/2926974410  I remember going to see ZZ Top at the Asheville Civic Center. It's a blur of marijuana smoke, fist fights, vomit and confederate flags... and I was sober.

Stevie Nicks with Tom Petty - "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UD0c58nNCQ  I love both Steve Nicks and Tom Petty, so this was a treat.

80s music from people with a common denominator...

- I always wondered what had happened to him... nice cheese from back in the day
Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You

- His last #1 on the dance charts
Sylvester - Someone Like You
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x11fi2_sylvester-someone-like-you_music

- Before their annoying "Love Shack" and the fantastic "Roam" they were more avant-garde
The B-52's (with Ricky Wilson) - Song for a Future Generation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AEv1Pky-qo

- Everyone loves the one about taking them clothes off; I liked this one
Jermaine Stewart - Say It Again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dYjolgq0gM

Sharon Redd - Can You Handle It (Shep Pettibone Mastermix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-rkrwMchJk

- The funky sped-up voice in the M|A|R|R|S #1
Ofra Haza - Galbi

B-52's were great live too. Here is one of my favorites: "Planet Claire" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWqI_a7YHvM

Oingo Boingo were another great 80s party band. "No One Lives for Ever", a song I was totally into after my AIDS diagnosis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S7rmq4XvBI

I'm so happy dancing while the grim reaper
Cuts, cuts, cuts
But he can't get me
I'm as clever as can be,
and I'm very quick, but don't forget
We've only got so many tricks
No one lives forever!!!
