URGENT//Traveling for work//No medication in foreign country

Hey,

So I have been on complera since last September and now I have been offered a job in Jamaica as I work in Travel and Tourism. The issue is that complera is not available in Jamaica and I cannot get more than a month's supply at a time on my insurance.

Due to customs and immigrations concerns, I cannot have the pills shipped to me each month and after speaking to a doctor in Jamaica, he advised that I may have to change medication.

I may have turn down this job offer if I cannot find a solution, can someone help me please!

Did you find out what meds are available in Jamaica? If so, what are they?

A med switch isn't necessarily a terrible thing, depending on how badly you want this career opportunity.

Some countries allow you to have your meds fedex'd in with proper permission...Check with their Health Department...Good luck

Hey there, you need to ask your pharmacy to negotiate with the insurance. I just moved to Africa for my job too (where meds are not available) and although the insurance gave me an issue with supplying me with 3 months, they agreed at the end, and approved me with 6 months...that said, I will still have to come home every six months...My advice would be to try to negotiate with insurance for a six month supply and then come home, I wouldn't switch doctors, that alone let someone out side the US treat me...no offense, but we have top tier treatment (expensive but the best)...hope you can figure it out and get to enjoy Jamaica

Drugs are available in Africa.  Which drugs, and at what price, another question, sure.

Questionable whether the US has the "the best" medical care.

I think these comments are a bit xenophobic and careless.

Agreed.  US docs are quite capable of delivering less than "top tier" care.

Sorry Mecch I was not trying to be xenophobic/carless or rude in any way, I was giving my personal opinion without insulting anyone, if it came as an offense I apologize for that. But I thought this forums are for discussing our issues without offending, and you calling me xenophobic puts you in exactly the same spot your judging me on... If is not the case that i can express myself in here, then I have no purpose of being here...

Anyway, I think that when it comes to anything in life including one's illnesses, only the person living them can make a wise decision, I was just merly giving my limited personal opinion on this matter as I am in the same situation but different country...that's all...

Ok you are not "xenophobic".  I'm sorry.

Since you live in Africa now, maybe time to learn that all African countries have some kinds of HIV drugs. Not what you claimed. It's not a matter of personal opinion its just  a fact.

Also be proud, as an American, because the US and US foundations shell out billions to help provide HIV treatment...

Also there is no recent survey, evaluation, that I am aware of that ranks the USA as having the best medical care.  So if you are living in Africa, and have no confidence in all doctors that might be available there, no matter what, its just a pity, really.

I didnt make my comment to shut you up. I made it to point out that the world may not be as you think it is.

You have a great opportunity being an expat now to widen your experience.  I have been an expat for a long time and learn a lot by keeping my eyes open and comparing the different realities of different countries.
