Happy Days Are Here Again
« on: April 06, 2007, 12:52:33 am »
I just had my first poop-in-my-pants due to HIV meds in about four years... I thought those days were over since switching to fuzeon and prezista... guess not!

Fortunately I was 30 ft. from the bathroom.

*sigh*

No, I don't think so.  I had a late lunch of a large salad.  Didn't eat any dinner.

Oh.... don't bring up THAT experience.

I've been on the toilet four times since my first post and I'm feeling more knocking at the back door as I type.

It's starting to subside, but I think this is nearing a record.  I may have one last splurt left up in me.

Guess I should drink a huge glass of water now.

Well... I don't think this was at all due to the HIV meds, though I've certainly had my experience of the runs due to those years ago.  This HAD to be due to bad food at the place I ate my salad.  I'm never going back there... I've never had it this bad.

omg... gotta go again.

I have been having similar experiences on Prezista. The first 6-8 months had no problems. Since then about twice a week I spend the day running to the toilet. But numbers are great so WTF? I was sick all day yesterday.

Philly....

I dare say we all have had our share of "little accidents" so you are in good company.  Whether its the meds you're taking or
perhaps due to fresh vegetables not being washed (your salad you mentioned)...there will be times when things like this happen so
the best thing you can do is be prepared...  I'd think about using less expensive sheets during those times when the plumbing isn't
working properly...if possible take a extra set of underwear/clothes when leaving the house and don't forget the wet wipes...just a
suggestion.  I was a Eagle Boy Scout ....and I'm an anal homoselectual so I believe in being PREPARED and there were a couple of times
when I was glad of it.  Nothing like walking out of a movie theatre or a grocery store with soiled trousers and smelling to high heavens
to make a person feel totally humiliated.   Don't forget to hydrate....

I think I can safely say this morning that this was NOT HIV-med related diarrhea, but was definitely food poisoning.  I will not be revisiting SaladWorks in Center City that's for sure.

I got about 4 hours of sleep, though when I woke up I had another liquid poop attack.  It's been about five hours though since that last one so I think it's done now.  Yes, I'm now drinking water but I lost so much from my body I think I may go to the pharmacy and buy something stronger.  A Canadian friend of mine recommended "Gastrolyte" which addresses electrolyte depletion after diarrhea.

Unfortunately I'm still not feeling safe enough to leave my apartment! We'll see maybe in a few hours.

Oh, and I've also developed a cold -- hooray... either that or it's my bronchitis returning.  Goes to show that having 931 cd4's does little good.

Philly, you poor baby! I've been there, many times with salmonella and e. coli, but for the last three years with IBS. Ass so raw that I've become a top. This adds to my proposal that eveyone should have some Phenergan or Lomotil on hand in case of emergencies...and some Calmoseptine for that sore bottom.

Kisses! (chaste, for now)

Philly,

Sounds like you have really had a rough 24 hours.  Seems like the only
bright side (if indeed there is one) is that it doesn't sound like your HIV
meds are the culprits.  Goes to show you just how important safe food
preparation and handling practices can be.

I hope you get over this soon.  And I agree with the other's posters'
advice to be sure you are properly hydrated.

Yeah, this definitely isn't HIV related.  My cd4's are way too high for that.  Definitely food poisoning... oddly I've never gotten this ever in my life, and I've done a fair amount of traveling overseas and eating in dicey places like up in the mountains of the Dominican Republic with no ill effect.

I've subsisted on Gatorade, saltines and chicken and noodle soup for the last 24 hours and I had one bowel movement today that, while not a liquid napalm bomb, did remind me of the kind of feces a toddler would produce (think smell).  And all day long my stomach has been churning and I feel somewhat sea sick.  I also had a temperature of 99.6 last night, but it's been normal all day today.

Overall though I  suppose I could feel much worse.  I still  managed to masturbate one time last night and I figure when that's still possible it's something to be thankful for.

Thanks for all the community concern.  I appreciate it and it  cheers me up .

Well, for one thing I had a flu shot though I suppose since I got that back in October it's worn off.   Plus I was getting the cold days before the violent multi-episodic diarrhea.  Added to that was that this diarrhea was unlike anything I've ever experienced in my entire life leads me to believe it's directly from bad food.

Anyway, seems logical to me.  I ate the salad around 3 or 4 pm and had the reaction 8 hours later.  How long does it take food to move through your system?  I forget.

Usually in 24 hours and it sounds like it's moved on through your system.  It does sound like food poisoning so stay hydrated and keep the immodium nearby.

Hope you feel better.

Question:  I'm poop is now green... though it's firming up the stools are putrid in form.  Obviously this would be normal considering my potential food poisoning and how gastro issues take days to resolve, but I'm wondering if I should go out and buy something like acidopholis, bifidus or whatever those supplements for one's intestines are called.

I used to regularly take acidopholis supplements back in my hyper-holistic days in the 90's but I'm so out of the loop with the preponderance of these things nowadays due mostly to my minimal income.  I only buy fish oil and multi-vitamins.

If there's any suggestion on what might speed the recovery of my ailing digestive tract I would appreciate it -- as I woke in the middle of the night with a diarrhea attack and almost ruined my expensive bed linens and mattress.  Maybe I should sleep with my pair of rubber underwear tonight :)

And yes, I have been taking immodium (like 8 mg/day) plus my normal Pancrecarb, and still having these issues.

I would suggest the BRAT diet.  Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast (dry).  This will ease your stomach back into "food mode" and FIRM up whatever else is left in there.  It works trust me, I've had food poisoning A LOT.

hmmm... I've been doing the applesauce and saltines so far, but no bananas.  I'll pick some up.  Should the rice be brown?  Thanks for the recommendations, dear.

White or brown rice it doesn't matter, no crackers, toast.  Eat the BRAT diet for 2 days, ease other foods in, but make them bland.  And remember, once you have had food poisioning, statistics say that you are predisposed to getting it again very easily so watch what and where you eat out at.  Kisses!

Really?  I didn't know about that latter part?  I wonder why that is.  That's a horrifying realization.

However, one side benefit of this drama is that I've lost 10 lbs. and am now back to my "ideal" weight of 165 lbs.  Though of course I'm sure it's simple loss of water weight and hence a mirage.

hmmm... a friend of mine told me DO NOT take any sort of anti diarrhea meds. Apparently keeping that shit in can cause the body to absorb bacterial ickness that can lead to perforated intestines.

Anyone else think that is true?  I pretty much have to take them because of my HIV meds.  Ugh... not sure what to do.

Yes, for certain types of GI infection, taking anti motility drugs isn’t recommended, as they can interfere with your body’s ability to get rid of the bacteria/parasite
If you do need both the pancrecarb & Immodium to deal with the meds related stuff though, then I would keep taking them - but if this isn’t well on its way to being resolved within the next 24-48 hours, do get in touch with your dr

Main thing is to keep fluid levels up with electrolyte replacement powder/drinks, BRAT diet like sdgirl suggests..and yes, some probiotics would be a good idea too, to replace good intestinal bacteria

hope you're feeling better soon - kate

No, I think it was resolved almost completely that first night.  I mean, I must have shit 15 times within 90 minutes literally-- that's a lot of ejection, right?   I'm not exaggerating either.  I was honestly amazed that my body could produce that much material in such a condensed amount of time.

I just didn't consider NOT taking the imodium and pancrecarb because I don't take them on an "as needed" basis like many people do for HIV meds.   I have to take them with every dose of any protease inhibitor because of my past history of really bad GI issues for the last decade.  I routinely take 6mg of imodium each day anyway.  I guess I'm afraid that if I do not take these that my HIV meds will not be properly absorbed, because as it is my doctors now believe that my early GI issues when PI's first came out are what caused my early total resistance to PI's, and hence why it was not until 6 months ago that they were able to get my viral load to undetectable.

After living with an elevated VL for over a decade I'm obviously hesitant to screw around with things.  But at the same time I guess it won't hurt to try going 24 hours without any imodium and see what happens, as it will at least clear out any residual toxins.

A few years ago I have had a bad case of stomach infection.Maybe it was a start of all this s... I do not know .Anyway a friend of mine  a doctor suggested me to do two things :
a) to drink a Coca-cola because it has a phosphoric acid in it which is a certified bacteria enemy ,and a lot of calories to restore your energy levels. But not do overdo it...............
b) There in Serbia we did have a specific drug called "Streptoxasol" by" Pliva " and it was really good. ( combination of a specific antibiotic and a sulphur drug
compounds)
12. Oct`06.  CD4=58 %  VL not issued
25.Dec.`06.         203     VL= 0
..................................................
25.Dec`06.- 19.Oct`16 :
various ups & downs- mostly ups - from 58-916 and back in #CD and few blips in VL.
...................................................
19.Oct`16     CD4=644      VL=0

Thanks for asking dear... and how timely.  I just now had my first near normal bowel movement, thought the color is still odd.  At least the actual stools are normal in size and slightly firmer... and that's even with skipping all imodium with yesterday evenings HIV med dosage.

However, I'm wary to skip the imodium with my next dosage because I need to go out of the house at 6 PM tonight to a meeting.
