Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Testing Question.

Hello all,

Here is my story.  A few years back I used to travel a lot for work and being a single guy I slept with a number of women including prostitutes.  Always used a condom.  I believe there was one occasion where it broke.  The last such contact was about 1.5 years ago.  Lately I have been having some health issues and for some reason started worrying that HIV could be the reason for all these trouble.  I researched which tests are offered in my area and decided to go for Oraquick, since it's quick and I wouldn't have to wait for my results for 2 weeks.  I had a choice of doing Oraquick fingerprick (only for HIV1) and Oraquick Advance oral swab (HIV1 and ).  I decided to do both, which surprised the tester a bit :)  Both came out negative.  Now, the question is:  "Am I 100 in the clear of HIV".  My mind tells me yes, but something within me is not sure and can't come up with any other causes of gout and some urological issues I have.   

Experts please respond.

See your Doctor about your gout and urological problems..and if you decide to carry on celebrating after you have had a drink..remember condoms at all time...NO EXCEPTIONS.. ;)

I posted a month ago regarding my oral sex exposure, but I think this may require a separate thread.

I went to a Testing Center in Chelsea area in Manhattan, NY and got tested using finger prick Oraquick.  The person doing the test was wearing rubber gloves.  He pricked my middle finger, drew blood and put a bandage over it. (I didn't look since I am afraid of blood).  When I left the center I noticed drying blood on my ring finger (outside of my hand).  I am a little concerned that it could be the blood of the nurse who tested me since I didn't follow the whole procedure after the prick.  Not sure how my blood could have got there and how he would miss it.

Is it possible that the nurse needlestuck himself and didn't notice?   I am a little concerned that if it's not my blood it could have gotten into my bloodstream through the puncture on my finger.

If you'd read the Welcome Thread before posting like you're supposed to, you'd know that we only allow one thread per person in this forum. Please abide by our posting guidelines.

We get people being paranoid about the actual test proceedure infecting them all the time. It just doesn't happen. You probably touched your pricked finger with your other finger without noticiing.

Besides, hiv does not infect through intact skin nor will it infect through a tiny needle-prick such as the one you got during the test. Getting some blood on your finger will not result in infection. Really.

Stop worrying needlessly about this. You ARE hiv negative.

Thank you Ann.   I am also thinking that a nurse would have noticed if he pricked himself and would not touch my hand if he saw blood on his.

One more thing.  I don't remember it clearly, but I may have licked the blood off my finger thinking that it's definetely my blood.  Could that pose a threat if the blood was infected?

If I lick infected blood, it wouldn't pose a risk?  Do you mean that it can't enter my bloodstream without sores in my mouth?

Meukow,

Saliva contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that damage hiv and render it unable to infect. You'd have to drink gallons of blood before you'd be at risk.
