Author Topic: HIV+, EMT and Police refuse to assist in 911 call Lynbrook, NY. (Read 12353 times)

On 12-22-10 approx. 5a. I woke up dizzy along with abdominal discomfort. Called 911. I managed to crawl dwnstairs 2 knock on my neighbors door 4 help n open front door 4 police (2 fam house). EMT says "u got me out here at 5a for a stomach ache". As I lay in front door with underwear n teeshirt. I could hear them asking ? but felt like I was going 2 pass out. EMT put oxygen mask on. While police asking what was wrong? After telling them. I also stated that I was HIV+. She (EMT) says "I wish u would have told me that b4 I touched u". So now there putting on double gloves. One officer went up to get my pants and slippers. Dropped them in front of me and said "put them on". I told them I could not move. They would not even put my feet in 2 pants legs. As there yelling at me "yes u can, and we r not leaving until u do". I am freezing with the door wide open. There is just a brief discription. My main concern is 2 have this dealt with. I hate 2 think what would have happened if I was bleeding or vomiting. Someone please help me? I want this to b known. If I have to risk going on the news . This can't go on. What angencies can help me? I have been a nurse 4 20 years and HIV+ longer. I did not come this far to be treated like this.

First of all Merry Christmas and welcome to the forums.

I'm an retired Nurse living with HIV and I volunteer as an Ambulance Officer in NZ, the way you were treated was bloody disgusting, the first thing you have to do is complain to the EMT communications they will know what Ambulance was sent out to you and the crew who attended you...or they should know, you can't let them get away with this, it's discrimination and it's against the law, at least it is here in NZ.

Regardless of your status you should have been treated with respect and dignity, myself and my crew have been called out to a couple of HIV patients in the past and have treated them no different to any other patient we have had to deal with, do something about this don't leave it too late.

They should be fired in my opinion, stigma in the medical field is appalling and has got to be stopped, I'm so sorry you were treated this way.

Welcome to the Forums... For a couple of years, I served on the Sonoma County Commission on AIDS as the press contact and have built relationships with editors, new directors in a 5 county region. Currently serving as PR/Advertising agent for a San Francisco law firm. For legal advice www.findlaw.com is an excellent choice, most attorneys offer a free consultation.

If you decide not to take any legal action, the public still has a right to know. Call the papers, radio stations and TV that serves your area to get the editors names and fax numbers to send a press release stating the facts and your phone number. If assigned to a reporter, he/she will be calling you, the EMT and the police officer so keep your facts very accurate, they will be verified

These people need to be reported. In fact, they should be fired. I don't think there is any excuse for this and no sensitivity training that would help those people. These kinds of things are what cause people to hide their status to medical professionals, which can be dangerous.

I am so touched by all the responses. I have gone forward with this. I am in touch with newspapaers, tv news, councilmen, act up and the NAACP. This is so upsetting everytime I think about what happened. U r right. This is just why people don't say anything. They have just made things worse for themselves. I will keep u up to date. Good for you dc...we have to stand up to people like that and get rid of the Stigma once and for all, with the right peole behind you, you can make a difference.

that's absolutely appalling treatment. I'm glad you have taken up the fight.
i was admitted to hospital last night and have had nothing but exemplary treatment. you/we should expect/demand nothing less.

Why are you contacting the NAACP? Isn't that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People? How would they be of help in an HIV/AIDS discrimination case? Just curious...

u r right about the NAACP. I am a 53 y o blk gay male. In a town that is 95% white. I have 3 strikes against me. Black, gay and HIV+. I hope this answers ur ?

That is just disgusting on there behalf. I would have been traumatized for a long time. These people should know better.They should not be working in this feild of work. Plain ignorant. I am sooo sorry this happened to you.
