Good thing I'm right-handed......
« on: September 22, 2011, 05:33:10 pm »
I was playing in a tennis tournament this past weekend.  I fell on my left arm and ass going back for an overhead.  Now I have a broken left wrist.....  I did win the match where I fell, and played 3 more (I know what you are thinking -- how incredibly BUTCH).

Cast is on until at least Nov 3.....  at least they didn't need to put a screw in the bone.

Hope you feel better soon . When I was a kid I wanted a broke arm so bad . I was jealous of a class mate of mine who got everone to sign his cast ... he had some really cool decals on that hunk of plaster too and the little s.o.b. took my girlfriend Pam away until she got tired of carring his books around all day . I eventually dumped Pam anyway because she always smelled like egg salad .

You sure it was just the egg salad smell?  The fact that she was an "inny" and you wanted an "outy" had nothing to do with it??   ;)

As for wishing you had a broken arm -- I'll trade wrists with you.

Wow --- sounds painful --- I've never broken a bone (dislocated a thumb  - and that was painful enough)

Sending you wishes for a speedy recovery.

Feel for you.  Oddly enough, BUTCH was not the reaction I got when I drove myself to the emergency roon with a broken wrist a few years ago, either.  (I mean how hard is it to drive an automatic?!?)

So ... how's your bone mineral density?

I have no idea.  As this is only the second bone break in my life, the other also being in my left wrist when I was 12 or 13, I'm not particularly worried about it.
Yes -- I am aware of the studies on bone density and HIV, but at this point I see no need to go and have a test that is most likely completely unnecessary for ME.

Thanks for your concern though.

Ummmm -- no dear -- today is Oct 3rd.  Nov 3rd (and my appt) are a month away.  However -- we all now know what to get you for Christmas ----  a calendar!!!    ;D

The wrist is doing OK, I guess.  No pain, but the cast is driving me nuts.  Fortunately, I got one that can get wet -- makes showering much easier.
I played tennis last night for the first time with the cast -- felt good to get back out there, but it made tossing the ball for serving an adventure.  You never truly understand how important having opposable thumbs are, until one of them is immobilized!!

Hugs,
M

You are so right... it only feels like Nov 3rd..  !!  I thought about what I had posted and figured I would check again to see.  Maybe I need another cup of coffee.  Countdown now till the 'real' Nov 3rd.

We are all worried you might be left with a limp wrist , if that happens you may be in danger of developing a lisp also ... so please give us an update  ;) .

So, the wrist has not fully healed.  Though it did feel so good to have that cast cut off......

The doc showed me the xrays from 6 wks ago side by side with the new ones -- I could see it had healed some, but not completely.  He had told me this was a tough bone to heal (the scaphoid).  So..............  4 more weeks of immobilization.

The good news, after swearing to follow his directions, to the letter -- he let me avoid another cast and put me in a wrist/thumb split.  I am to remove it ONLY to shower and/or wash my hands -- otherwise it is on round the clock.  I like it much better though -- it doesn't hurt when I knock myself in the head at night.

On a "limp wrist" note......  when the cast came off, I could barely move my wrist or my thumb.  The 6 weeks of being stationary has definitely tightened ligaments and weakened muscles.  When they were taking x-rays, I needed to have my had flat and bend the wrist out, to turn my hand.  I got about 1/2 inch out and pain was shooting up my arm (from the non-broken side).  She stood there and asked if it hurt (apparently my scream didn't give her a clue) -- I told her if she didn't move her ass back to the x-ray button in 2 seconds there would be trouble.  She laughed and stood there looking at me.  My reply was, "does this face look like it is joking right now -- MOVE IT".  She complied.

Mike
