Although not in general release yet, here's link to Downtown Calling, documentary about 70s/80s music which my son Ben produced. It's about the social, political, cultural and art influences of the music and since then including the beginnings of the epidemic. Debbie Harry is the narrator.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA7YPi3fMYo
His next one is called Rubble Kings and is about gangs of NY and how they transformed themselves from killing each other to transforming their communities.

Ghastly. Might've as well included that godawful "Ghostbusters" song by Ray Parker Jr. I think that, along with "Macho Man" by the VP, is my most hated song of all time.
To me the 80s are all about teh Smiths.

I think YMCA is worse than Macho Man, which had a decent groovy verse.

I was watching The Voice and Cee Lo Green made a comment about how young people who don't know who Pat Benatar is should look her up. That made me feel sad... and old.

Remember that when we fondly remember the 80's it is just like our parents waxing nostalgic back in the 70's for the 50's.

OMG, the memories.
Anything The Smiths did in the 80s is awesome.
I also like Spandau Ballet ("True") . . . Cindy Lauper and Madonna were rivals back then. "Borderline" has special significance for me, it kept coming on the radio as I was driving to NYC with my first love (that, and "Let's Hear it For the Boy").
Miss Whitney Houston could still sing back then.
I hate to say it but I like "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" even though it sounds kind of pathetic now (the song, not moi). At the time no one had seen anything like Boy George.
And I LOVE The Cure, especially "Just Like Heaven."
"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"
-
I forgot: no conversation about the 80s is complete without Miss Sinead O'Connor, especially Mandinka.
Here she is at the 1989 Grammys, she was 21 years old:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JugUQJv9YlY
I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't see the flame
But I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do
The 80s were a strange, bittersweet time. It was, after all, when the scourge of AIDS took flight (pardon the mixed metaphors).
-
Was listening to Sinead's 1st album all this spring.
How did I forget Prince. A million sexy college memories just came back.
Also saw a pic of Prince the other day. He's gonna be like Cher, ageless.

That Jesus & Mary Chain somehow reminds me of Echo & The Bunnymen - Bring on the dancing horses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaWs79v0ugE) (maybe it was just the hair? :D) which I really liked at the time (and still do) - which then again reminds me of the almost like flowing-into-space Black - Wonderful life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyfu_mU-dmo)
-
My high school classmates didn't listen to a lot of the new wave 80's music listed here. Even Duran Duran was considered quasi-gay, and no one would have admitted to listening to Culture Club... no one. What I remember of music at my high school was Van Halen. Everyone wanted to be Eddie Van Halen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-NshzYK9y0
and ROTC field trips with everyone singing "Jack and Diane" until our ears bled.

-
I went to see Culture Club during their first US tour (they'd only had their first hit at that point and still played small venues) and I proudly wore my CC t-shirt to high school. Once I went to college I bailed on the "poppy" stuff mostly. Though as a freshman I had tickets to see the Thompson Twins, got deathly ill and gave my ticket to a friend, who ended up backstage with them snorting coke. I was so devastated.
ps: I also saw Jesus and Mary Chain live, first tour @ 9:30 Club

"Wood Beez" is better, agree, but I have this 12" import and the B-side has their "Turntable Mix" which was fun to play in a elevated DJ booth where the partiers couldn't actually see the tables. I would shuffle around and flip a bunch of vinyl and those frat boys would think I was the coolest queer in town.

pre-... this is from the most awesome New Gold Dream album and I saw them live at the Ontario Theater in DC during this tour, and it was one of the best live shows I ever went to (1983, when most of you were still toddlers). My vinyl edition is also a lovely transparent gold and purple colored edition. But if you don't own the double-LP that "Theme" is from you should own it. Oh, and the 12" of "I Travel" from that album is a must:

They sold out right after this, though I can tolerate the first sell out album with "On the Waterfront" somewhat.

Shaunette, you have managed to give some serious credibility to an otherwise pedestrian thread.
I still adore Matt Johnson. Even his 90's stuff was to die for (I don't care what anybody says about 1995's Hanky Panky, I loved it)
And I met him some time in 1992 or '93 when I saw him opening for Depeche Mode.
Here he is with Sinead, circa 1989:

If you must have a SAW song in order to complete the 80s rundown.. this has to be the one..
Apparently Boy George loved them because the lead singer was so cute and he sounded a bit like him when he hit the high notes..

Yeah, I don't own that original pressing. My ex from back in the day gave me this Canadian pressing (came out in 1981 as well, but it is not as sought after --and for some reason I believe mine looks different than this pic that they have on Discogs). And, of course, I have the re-release on CD so that I can listen to it in the cah.

definitely an important track (there's even a Tenaglia mix of this on Tourism)
as far as Depeche Mode I was very on/off with them album-wise post Construction Time Again, but love stuff like the Pettibone mix of "Behind the Wheel" and later Kevorkian ones

(though I'd find it better to separate out the New Wave/No Wave/New Romantic/College Alt-Rock era from the late 80's proto-House material... can I have a second? I was very fortunate to be in the UK when M/A/R/R/S, Colorbox and S Express exploded)

This (along with a 'Best of' compilation) is the only thing that I own from Colourbox. I bought some time in the 90s as I have always been obsessed with the one single by M|A|R|R|S. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my hands on the mini-album or the rare EP (I have one of them them as mp3 files, but I won't count that).

And indeed, "Arena II" is just lovely.

Same stuff as MARRS and S Express, but just watch it for fun. The guy who made the video did a nice job video-mixing Thunderbirds with Bomb The Bass - Beat dis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mRmhoO6x3E).
In the same vein of style (I think) you'll find EMF - Unbelievable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waacof2saZw). Altough it's from 1990 it still sounds like 80's stuff that's a bit late to the party ;o)

::faints::
Not that I disliked Ms. Vélez and crew (especially their "Can You Feel The Beat" and "I Wonder If I Take You Home", got some great memories of life in Queens with their shit being played all ovah the place), but I always looked at their music as more on the Freestyle Side of things --I see them kinda like Exposé, Noel, Sweet Sensation, and Information Society. I however detested Stevie B. and Debbie Deb.
