Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Unprotected Receptive Anal but no ejaculation

So, I know that I made a really huge dumb mistake. But I slept with this guy and we had unprotected sex but he released on my chest. This happened just 48 hours ago. I found out yesterday however that he is HIV positive... I know that there is a huge risk of me getting it but Im not sure what to do at this point. I do not have any health insurance. My other concern is that he penetrated me a few weeks ago (again without a condom) but for not as long and Im wondering could I have gotten it then too.

I have known him for a while but I felt like I could have trusted him. I know that was incredibly stupid and I especially feel badly because I just got into medical school and I should know better.

What should I do? Am I at a large risk? Should I go to the ER to get PEP? It hasnt been 72 hours yet. Im really worried and scared.

You seem like a great candidate for PEP, assuming you are not already HIV positive from the first incident or any prior.

As a bottom, you are at most risk of contracting HIV through unprotected sex, even if your partner does not ejaculate inside you. Of course, if he is on meds and has an undetectable viral load, your risk is vanishingly small (though due to blips in seminal viral load, which are rarely if ever checked, your risk is slightly higher than had you been a top in these situations.)

Wear a condom for penetrative sex. TALK about safer sex. NEGOTIATE your comfort zones. You have all the information you need to avoid HIV infection. I urge you to use that information now, before it impacts your entire life.

Realize of course that PEP is most effective within 24 hours of exposure, and drops off dramatically by hour 72.
